According to Nadclovek from PSP-Spot (sourcing an EB Games Regional Manager in Calgary, Canada), new shipments of PlayStation Portables may sport higher firmware (4.xx) and retail at 169.99 CAD or around US$ 153.67. This might not be good for PSP sales to say the least.
Nadclovek says:
Sony was sending out Emails to its Commercial Retailers that all new PSPs to be sent out will have 'Downgradable Prevention' built right into them. All new PSPs to be shipped out as of next week Friday, May 18th, will be a higher firmware, 4.xx (specifics were not released), but they were promised to include new security features to prevent hacks and downgrades. Apparently this is one of their first steps to start focusing on the PSP again, instead of diverting all attention to the PS3.
The report also mentions that it might have implications in North American PSP sales. While wee doubt that it'll be the end of PSP hacking as wee know it, but it's a sobering thought to say the least. For now though, wee're still sticking this in the rumor bin until further notice. Stay tuned.

who cares... no firmware is supposed to b downgradable n e way!! they r just admittin that previous fw is poo poo!! :-P
it will probably b hacked into eventually!!

Yeah sony has failed many times before so lets hope they fail again
They are just fuggin' up the sales
yea.. making it cheaper than normal....
They maybe changing somethings in the PSP, maybe changing it flash is no way touchable anymore or something, or something with the mobo.
Iono... they jsut getting desperate
nowai they will make the flash read-only cause that will mean no firmware updates
meh i think they are redesigning the motherboard so UP and the other chip won't fit anymore, and by making it undowngradable theyre just making something that it won't accept anything less than 4.00. this could be a pain in the donkey for software mods though... and they would have to design a new modchip to fit it
however
i think the protection will be able to be bypassed with a hardware mod, but the ppl will have to wait for a new modchip to be designed and released, IF it will ever come..
i expect 4.00 OE to show up like normal though just the 4.00 PSPs will be harder to hack
If man can make it, man can break it. So what if it can't be downgraded? New OE's could simply trick the PSP into thinking it's an update and then you could just flash via the XMB. How funny would that be?
yeah don't forget, wee got team c + d and dax on our side. I think they can take sony.
