iOS 6 Jailbreak [Untethered] Released [MOST DEVICES]
07/02/2013 07:29 AM Posted by: Venom in Tech News
UPDATED
Evasi0n 1.3 works with the 6.1.1 update for the iPhone 4S

From Redmondpie:

The iOS 6 / 6.1 untethered jailbreak has now become a reality, thanks to the hard work from those involved in the newly formed Evad3rs jailbreak team. The release of the new userland-based Evasi0n jailbreak tool means that users now have an extremely efficient way of making a complicated background process seem extremely simple.

Supported devices:

As mentioned in our previous post, Evasi0n supports all 20+ variants of iOS devices, including the likes of iPhone 5, on iOS 6.0 through iOS 6.1. Apple TV 3 though is not supported.

Supported firmware versions:

iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1 are all supported.

Requirements:

A computer running at least Windows XP or above, Mac OS X v10.5 or above, Linux
An iOS device running iOS 6.x
A USB cable for connection your iOS device to your computer.

How-to jailbreak iOS 6.1 (instructions):

If you happen to be one of those who have been waiting extremely patiently for this jailbreak, then you’ve come to the right place. Follow our extremely simple step by step guide below to jailbreak your iOS device on iOS 6 / 6.1 fully untethered.

NOTE:

a. It is highly recommended to make a complete backup of your device using either iTunes or iCloud before proceeding with the steps below.

b. If you happen to have followed our guide for older A4 based devices for tethered jailbreak iOS 6.1, the good news is that you can easily convert your tethered jailbreak into untethered by installing “evasi0n 6.x Untether” from Cydia.

Step 1: Download Evasi0n jailbreak tool tailored for your OS (Windows / Mac / Linux).

Step 2: Download iOS 6.1, and update your device to it using iTunes. Make sure you restore your device to 6.1 using iTunes, and not OTA, to avoid issues with jailbreak. Even though Evasi0n supports all versions of iOS 6, it is recommended to update to the latest 6.1 version before jailbreak so that you can get all the new features of iOS 6.1, with the added bonus of jailbreak.

Step 3: Make sure you don’t have any passcode set on your device. You can disable Passcode lock from: Settings –> General –> Passcode Lock –> Off

Step 4: Make sure both iTunes and Xcode (if installed) are not running.

Step 5: Start the Evasi0n jailbreak tool on your computer.

Step 6: Connect the relevant iOS device to your PC or Mac via the 30-pin or Lightning cable (depending on the generation of the hardware). Make sure that the connected hardware is recognized by the jailbreak tool.

Step 7: Select the Jailbreak option and relax as the software performs the necessary steps in the background to inject and run through the jailbreaking process.

Step 8: Be patient, do not touch your device or anything on computer during  jailbreaking process.

Step 9: Once done, you will need to unlock your iOS Device, you will then see a “Jailbreak” app on the home screen. Tap on this icon, the screen will go black for a few seconds. After a short while, it will be back on the home screen.

Step 10: Rest of the process is automated, once the Evasi0n software on desktop says “Jailbreak complete!”, after a short while, your device will reboot several times to complete the process. Once this is done, you will have Cydia on the home screen.

Running Cydia

Start Cydia from the home screen of the device. Be aware that the first run of Cydia after a jailbreak will require the owner to choose what type of user they are (user, developer or hacker) as well as a run-through of some initial repository setup. Please be patient as this could take some time depending on server load.

As always, remember that the release of any new jailbreak will always see an initial spike in activity at first release. The servers of Cydia and the stock repositories are expected to handle an unusually high load in the first few days, so expect some possible delays and frustrating moments when trying to load and refreshing data.

Antigua can infringe US copyright, approved by WTO
29/01/2013 07:09 PM Posted by: ZiNgA BuRgA in Random News
Quote:During a meeting in Geneva today the World Trade organization (WTO) authorized Antigua’s request to suspend U.S. copyrights. The decision confirmed the preliminary authorization the Caribbean island received in 2007, and means that the local authorities can move forward with their plan to start a download portal which offers movies, music and software without compensating the American companies that make them.

Today, this plan came a step closer to reality when the Caribbean country received authorization from the WTO to suspend U.S. copyrights during a meeting in Geneva.

This decision affirms the preliminary approval that was granted to Antigua in 2007 after the country won a gambling related trade dispute against the United States.

At the moment it’s still unclear what Antigua’s exact plans are but TorrentFreak is informed that the media portal will offer movies, TV-shows, music as well as software to customers worldwide.

[...]

The Government has not given a time-frame for the release of the site, which has been in the works for a few months already. Ideally, Antigua hopes to settle the dispute before opening up their free media portal but there are no signs that the U.S. is going to comply with the WTO rulings.

Thus far, the U.S. has only warned Antigua that “Government-authorized piracy” would harm the ongoing settlement discussions.

[...]

The Antiguan government further reiterated today that the term “piracy” doesn’t apply in this situation, as they are fully authorized to suspend U.S. copyrights. It is a legal remedy that was approved by all WTO members, including the United States.

If Antigua does indeed pull through, it will be rather interesting to see how the U.S. responds. It might add a whole new dimension to the ongoing “war on piracy.”

I wonder how this will turn out...

Anonymous hacks the United States Sentencing Commission
28/01/2013 08:57 AM Posted by: Nemeto in Random News
Anonymous are at it again...

http://www.ussc.gov(DOWN)- Read the Cached version on Chrome

Anonymous uploaded a video about their 'Attack' of the website and made a big point about having a 'Warhead' which ended up just being a file.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaPni5O2YyI

Quote:Citizens of the world,

Anonymous has observed for some time now the trajectory of justice in the United States with growing concern. Wee have marked the departure of this system from the noble ideals in which it was born and enshrined. Wee have seen the erosion of due process, the dilution of constitutional rights, the usurpation of the rightful authority of courts by the "discretion" of prosecutors. Wee have seen how the law is wielded less and less to uphold justice, and more and more to exercise control, authority and power in the interests of oppression or personal gain.

Wee have been watching, and waiting.

Two weeks ago today, a line was crossed. Two weeks ago today, Aaron Swartz was killed. Killed because he faced an impossible choice. Killed because he was forced into playing a game he could not win -- a twisted and distorted perversion of justice -- a game where the only winning move was not to play.

Anonymous immediately convened an emergency council to discuss our response to this tragedy. After much heavy-hearted discussion, the decision was upheld to engage the United States Department of Justice and its associated executive branches in a game of a similar nature, a game in which the only winning move is not to play.

Last year the Federal Bureau of Investigation revelled in porcine glee at its successful infiltration of certain elements of Anonymous. This infiltration was achieved through the use of the *same tactics which lead to Aaron Swartz' death. It would not have been possible were it not for the power of federal prosecutors to thoroughly destroy the lives of any hacktivists they apprehend through the very real threat of highly disproportionate sentencing.

As a result of the FBI's infiltration and entrapment tactics, several more of our brethren now face similar disproportionate persecution, the balance of their lives hanging on the severely skewed scales of a broken justice system.

Wee have felt within our hearts a burning rage in reaction to these events, but wee have not allowed ourselves to be drawn into a foolish and premature response. Wee have bidden our time, operating in the shadows, adapting our tactics and honing our abilities. Wee have allowed the FBI and its masters in government -- both the puppet and the shadow government that controls it -- to believe they had struck a crippling blow to our infrastructure, that they had demoralized us, paralyzed us with paranoia and fear. Wee have held our tongue and waited.

With Aaron's death wee can wait no longer. The time has come to show the United States Department of Justice and its affiliates the true meaning of infiltration. The time has come to give this system a taste of its own medicine. The time has come for them to feel the helplessness and fear that comes with being forced into a game where the odds are stacked against them.

This website was chosen due to the symbolic nature of its purpose -- the federal sentencing guidelines which enable prosecutors to cheat citizens of their constitutionally-guaranteed right to a fair trial, by a jury of their peers -- the federal sentencing guidelines which are in clear violation of the 8th amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishments. This website was also chosen due to the nature of its visitors. It is far from the only government asset wee control, and wee have exercised such control for quite some time...

There has been a lot of fuss recently in the technological media regarding such operations as Red October, the widespread use of vulnerable browsers and the availability of zero-day exploits for these browsers and their plugins. None of this comes of course as any surprise to us, but it is perhaps good that those within the information security industry are making the extent of these threats more widely understood.

Still there is nothing quite as educational as a well-conducted demonstration...

Through this websites and various others that will remain unnamed, wee have been conducting our own infiltration. Wee did not restrict ourselves like the FBI to one high-profile compromise. Wee are far more ambitious, and far more capable. Over the last two weeks wee have wound down this operation, removed all traces of leakware from the compromised systems, and taken down the injection apparatus used to detect and exploit vulnerable machines.

Wee have enough fissile material for multiple warheads. Today wee are launching the first of these. Operation Last Resort has begun...

Warhead - U S - D O J - L E A - 2013 . A E E 256 is primed and armed. It has been quietly distributed to numerous mirrors over the last few days and is available for download from this website now. Wee encourage all Anonymous to syndicate this file as widely as possible.

The contents are various and wee won't ruin the speculation by revealing them. Suffice it to say, everyone has secrets, and some things are not meant to be public. At a regular interval commencing today, wee will choose one media outlet and supply them with heavily redacted partial contents of the file. Any media outlets wishing to be eligible for this program must include within their reporting a means of secure communications.

Wee have not taken this action lightly, nor without consideration of the possible consequences. Should wee be forced to reveal the trigger-key to this warhead, wee understand that there will be collateral damage. Wee appreciate that many who work within the justice system believe in those principles that it has lost, corrupted, or abandoned, that they do not bear the full responsibility for the damages caused by their occupation.

It is our hope that this warhead need never be detonated.

However, in order for there to be a peaceful resolution to this crisis, certain things need to happen. There must be reform of outdated and poorly-envisioned legislation, written to be so broadly applied as to make a felony crime out of violation of terms of service, creating in effect vast swathes of crimes, and allowing for selective punishment. There must be reform of mandatory minimum sentencing. There must be a return to proportionality of punishment with respect to actual harm caused, and consideration of motive and mens rea. The inalienable right to a presumption of innocence and the recourse to trial and possibility of exoneration must be returned to its sacred status, and not gambled away by pre-trial bargaining in the face of overwhelming sentences, unaffordable justice and disfavourable odds. Laws must be upheld unselectively, and not used as a weapon of government to make examples of those it deems threatening to its power.

For good reason the statue of lady justice is blindfolded. No more should her innocence be besmirked, her scales tipped, nor her swordhand guided. Furthermore there must be a solemn commitment to freedom of the internet, this last great common space of humanity, and to the common ownership of information to further the common good.

Wee make this statement do not expect to be negotiated with; wee do not desire to be negotiated with. Wee understand that due to the actions wee take wee exclude ourselves from the system within which solutions are found. There are others who serve that purpose, people far more respectable than us, people whose voices emerge from the light, and not the shadows. These voices are already making clear the reforms that have been necessary for some time, and are outright required now.

It is these people that the justice system, the government, and law enforcement must engage with. Their voices are already ringing strong with a chorus of determined resolution. Wee demand only that this chorus is not ignored. Wee demand the government does not make the mistake of hoping that time will dampen its ringing, that they can ride out this wave of determination, that business as usual can continue after a sufficient period of lip-service and back-patting.

Not this time. This time there will be change, or there will be chaos...

 H.265
25/01/2013 09:20 PM Posted by: eKusoshisut0 in Tech News
Quote:The ITU has approved a new video format that could bring 4k video to future broadband networks, while also making streaming HD video available even on bandwidth-constrained mobile networks. The H.265 standard, also informally known as High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), is designed to provide high-quality streaming video, even on low-bandwidth networks.

The new video format is the successor to the H.264 codec, which nearly every video publisher has standardized after the release of the iPad and several other connected devices. It seems crazy now, but once upon a time, Apple’s adoption of H.264 and insistence on HTML5-based video players was controversial — especially since most video before the iPad was encoded in VP6 to play through Adobe’s proprietary Flash player.

The hope is that, through improved compression techniques, H.265 will enable publishers to stream 1080p video with about half as many bits as required today. That should make true streaming HD video available not just in broadband households, but on mobile and tablet devices, using networks that are a lot more bandwidth-constrained. Doing so could make online video more widely available in markets with poor connectivity or mostly mobile connections.

In places where there is decent broadband connectivity, H.265 could enable even higher-quality video. With 4K TVs finally becoming available, there’s an opportunity for even greater video resolution. The only problem is that networks aren’t built to support the load that streaming that video would require. With H.265, 4K streaming could be possible with as little as 20-30 Mbps of bandwidth. Still a lot by today’s standards, but not completely unheard of.

Of course, just because the format has been approved doesn’t mean that wee’ll start seeing video files shrink or lower bit-rate streams anytime soon. While there will likely be software-based encoders available by the end of the year, the codec won’t see mass adoption until it gets embedded into chips and hardware. It could be 12 to 18 months, maybe longer, before the first devices with H.265 hardware acceleration make it to market.

Once those initial devices do make it to market, however, wee can probably expect a quick ramp up in the amount of content that begins to take advantage of H.265. Since the launch of the iPad, the percentage of video published in H.264 has climbed from less than 10 percent to more than 84 percent in less than three years, according to MeFeedia.

The adoption of H.265 could mean less network strain, more HD video, or some combination of the two. I personally expect that the availability of a more efficient codec will more likely mean higher quality rather than smaller video files, but every little bit helps.

 Nvidia Project Shield
07/01/2013 02:16 AM Posted by: bsanehi in Tech News
[Image: Xv01-07_19-16-1320_verge_super_wide.jpg]

Game Radar Wrote:Hardware-maker Nvidia revealed development of an Android-powered handheld game console at a pre-CES press conference tonight. The system, currently going by the name "Project Shield," sports an Xbox 360-like controller with a 5" 720p touch screen attached. Nvidia claims that the internal battery allows for 5-10 hours of gameplay and up to 24 hours of video, putting it on par (if not slightly above) other handheld consoles on the market.

CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said that the handheld system is "pure Android" and showed off several different functions including video playback, social networking, and listening to audio, because it wouldn't be a game console if you couldn't watch <insert currently popular pop song> music videos on it.

Oh, and it plays video games--that's important. Huang showed off a few Android games, including a demo for the upcoming Hawken and some other Android games that looked great on the handheld's Tegra 4 processor. Even more exciting are Project Shield's PC gaming capabilities, which were also shown off (after a few technical hiccups). The system can't actually play PC games, but it can connect to a PC via wireless and stream Steam's Big Picture Mode. This, when mixed with the system's HDMI out capable of outputting 4K resolution, means you can play PC games on your TV with little lag (according to Nvidia), and serves as the link many need to get PC gaming on the television. In short, Project Shield is essentially working like the "rumored" Steam Box console was supposed to.

Father hires in-game assassins to deter son from online game
04/01/2013 10:25 PM Posted by: ZiNgA BuRgA in Tech News
Quote:Sick and tired of his son playing video games and not listening to him, a father in China decided to take matters into his own hands... well, sort of. Instead of sending his son off to addiction camp or stripping him of internet and gaming rights, Mr. Feng (冯先生) chose to hire an online "hitman" to school his son.

Feng's 23 year-old son, "Xiao Feng" (小冯) started playing video games in high school. Through his years of playing various online games, he supposedly thought himself a master of Chinese online role playing games. According to his father, Xiao Feng had terrible grades in school because of his gaming habit; he couldn't even land a job. He, however, says he simply couldn't find any work that he liked. Feng was annoyed that his son couldn't even tough it out for three months at a software development company.

Unhappy with his son not finding a job, Feng decided to hire players in his son's favorite online games to hunt down Xiao Feng. It is unknown where or how Feng found the in-game assassins—every one of the players he hired were stronger and higher leveled than Xiao Feng. Feng's idea was that his son would get bored of playing games if he was killed every time he logged on, and that he would start putting more effort into getting a job.

Some interesting logic and certainly a novel solution, though it seems a little... potentially unreliable perhaps...
I suppose it prevents you from being drugged over a ban nonetheless.

Teens trying dangerous new 'salt and ice challenge'
28/12/2012 04:21 PM Posted by: whjms in Random News
[Image: burn-from-salt-and-ice-image-2.jpg]
ClickOn Detroit Wrote:Detroit - You know what salt does to ice on a snowy road, It causes a chemical reaction.

Some teens are trying a dangerous trend called the salt and ice challenge. And, the results could be painful or cause serious injuries.

When you combine salt and ice on skin, it does damage to living cells and tissue.
It isn't hard to find teenagers foolish enough to try it either.

"It is in fact a stupid teenager prank or an event, something to do. What they do is they take salt and they lay it on a layer of skin and than they press ice down on it and in doing so it decreases the freezing point, which is normally 32 degrees Fahrenheit for ice, and it lowers that," said Dr. Ryan Shear.

At Botsford Hospital, mainly teenage boys are coming in with 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd degree skin burns from the challenge.

Doctors have seen enough teens with burns recently to know this is a problem.
...
Because salt and ice are common every day items, they can't be legislated under lock and key, they can't be hidden away, there is no black market for them.

And so that means the only way to stop teens from trying this, is parent-power.

Parents need to be aware that this is out there so they can have a proactive discussions with their teenagers and stop this at the curiosity, dare level.
Source: ClickOn Detroit

In other news, teenagers are trying a dangerous new drug called 'falling'. Supposedly, a child can, by intentionally tripping, cause a 'high'. Parents are advised to keep their children away from any hard surface, and to lock up any asphalt in the house, as it is the most potent drug for 'falling'.
