 SimCity 5 Fun
09/03/2013 06:13 PM Posted by: ZiNgA BuRgA in Tech News
So this game launched a short while ago and received a fair bit of hype - perhaps negative - around its DRM scheme.

It seems that, increasingly, games are moving to always online DRM schemes as they're probably harder to crack and less of an issue with more people having an always-on internet connection.  EA is certainly no smarter.

Well, to repeat some EA history, their servers got hammered after launch, resulting in:
Quote:Players attempting to play EA/Maxis' new SimCity game are finding that their save games are tied to a particular server, are facing problems with disconnects, inability to track friends or search for specific coop games online and failures to load game, and wait times of 20 minutes per login attempt. The question is, why the online restriction? Does this possibly indicate future micro-transactions in game?

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/03/cl...-problems/

Amazon's reviews averaged at around 1 star from the game, causing them to pull sales from their store.
EA have tried to respond by bringing up more servers and offering a free (EA) game to those who've had these issues.  But of course, they won't be pulling back their DRM, right?

Of course, this isn't particularly new; the Diablo III launch had similar problems I believe.
My personal belief is to never buy at launch - just wait a while whilst others discover all the problems and then make your decision.

The Pirate Bay and North Korea

So the world's most newsworthy torrent website pulled off a prank a few days ago, claiming to be hosted in North Korea.
More careful folk realised this soon after, but TPB have come out and admitted the prank.

Cool troll nonetheless.

'Fresh Prince' theme leads to school lockdown
02/03/2013 08:47 AM Posted by: whjms in Random News

Yahoo News Wrote:http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/fre...59936.html

A student's outgoing voice mail message quoting the theme to "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" led to a school lockdown in Ambridge, Pa.

The Times Online in Beaver, Pa., explains what happened. A receptionist from a doctor's office called to remind student Travis Clawson about an upcoming appointment. Clawson didn't pick up, so the call went to voice mail.

The receptionist heard what sounded like a threat about "shooting" and "school" on Clawson's outgoing message. Apparently, the message was intended to quote a lyric from the Will Smith sitcom's theme song that goes, "And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school." It's unclear if the receptionist misheard Clawson's message or if the student altered the lyrics.

The receptionist notified police, who notified school officials, who instituted a lockdown on every school in the county. After 20 frantic minutes, authorities located Clawson in the high school's guidance counselor's office.

Police took him into custody and interviewed him. It was then that Clawson explained his message was just a riff on the popular '90s sitcom about a young Philadelphia man who goes to live with his "auntie and uncle in Bel Air." According to Times Online, District Attorney Anthony Berosh said that after listening to the message closely it was determined that it did follow the Quincy Jones-penned song. Clawson was released and no charges were filed.

No word on whether he said "Smell ya later" upon being cleared.

Cool[RELEASE] ALTERNATE BLEACH THEME!!!
28/02/2013 11:24 PM Posted by: weterr123 in PSP Theme Releases
Hello again fellow Paradigmers!

It is here, so without beating around the bush, here's the screenies:

^Coldboot. Ulquiorra saying... something in Japanese (no dubbing for me lol)

^ Icons, again shown without background to show the clarity. My background choice is much better this time (and fitting, of course), see below. An extra nugget of thought went into character selection here. Aizen is leading with the games icon, while Ulquiorra has the settings - because Ulquiorra is often left in charge and also underhandedly manipulated Inoue into coming to Hueco Mundo - this echoing my choices for the original theme. :)

^Background included with theme. Icons work excellently with this Madwin

^Gameboot. It's Ichigo giving one of his "Ok, now I'm gonna actually own you" speeches before he beats the poo poo out of Grimmjow :D

I've improved on the sub icons with this one, the Huyogoku is much clearer.

Again, I'll be including icons as well as the theme. And as always, your opinions are appreciated, I hope you enjoy it as much as the first one :D

Cool[RELEASE] BLEACH THEME!!!
25/02/2013 05:57 PM Posted by: weterr123 in PSP Theme Releases
Out of all my themes, this one has definitely required the most time (the icons were an absolute bitch). As you all may have noticed, I've improved with each one I've done, and I'm rather proud of this, so I present to you:

THE BLEACH THEME!!

Screens:

^Coldboot. "GETSUGA TENSHOU!" is what you hear Madwin

^ICONS, of which this theme is centered around. Allow me to explain my logic. Captains are awesome, but I wanted Ichigo in there too. So, Ichigo is leading so to speak, which is why he has the main icon, games (as you know, the game menu is the first one you see when you turn PSP on). Also, my reasoning for using Aizen when he is 'good' (LOL) is simple. He has settings, to symbolize his underhandedness going on the whole time wee think he is just a good normal captain. There is extra reasoning behind this. I intend to make another version of this, revolving around some awesome arrancar... And guess who'll be leading them, with the GAMES icon?! Yep, I'll be using Aizen in his Las Noches clothing Madwin

^The default wallpaper I include with theme. Shown screenies without it to show how clear the icons are.

^Gameboot. Just before this end screen, you see Ichigo say (quite loudly haha), "BAN...KAI!"
Taken from the episode where he uses Bankai for the first time against Byakuya (man, that was an awesome episode!).

...And that's it for the moment. I'm really happy with this one, so give me your opinions please!

Oh, and for higher or different firmware users, I'm including the icons (in lovely .png format), just in case you need them if this doesn't convert well or something.

Ubuntu, HTC US sites feature new countdowns
19/02/2013 06:03 AM Posted by: whjms in Tech News

Both Ubuntu and HTC's US site feature identical countdowns.

I guess it'll be interesting. I'm kinda on the fence about the whole hype train Ubuntu creates whenever something like this happens. One one hand, it means Linux becomes bigger. On the other hand, Ubuntu's becoming like Apple, what with its whole secrecy/hype parts. On the third hand, the word 'Linux' is nowhere to be seen on Ubuntu's homepage. Note even on the 'about' section, or the 'Why is it free' section.
