I saw this post here, and it got me thinking...

What actually IS Funny?

I don't want to get all like "it's art, but is it art"? But I realised wee all have our own opinions of what funny is and I figured it might spark some healthy debate and stuff.  (I hereby pass all responsibility onto the mods if this thread dies with less than 3 replies).

So... I'm thinking if you can post up one thing that in your eyes defines funny - a link, a quote, a one-liner, whatever, and whether you think the previous post was funny or not (maybe a rating out of 10)?

This won't be used as evidence against you if and when you face institutionalization.  Honest.

Something is funny if it manages to entertain you in a way, typically through the use of something or someone's stupidity or an oddity.

If someone keeps committing the act of stupidity, it tends to loose it's humor value, as it's no longer an oddity (unless the fact that the amount of re-occurances is considered odd).

Yes, I think you're right - as ZiNga said, it's oddities seem to entertain - I was always taught that a joke is funny because of the unexpected ending.
But surely if something is always odd, then it's oddity becomes expected, therefore the internet itself will become a poor benchmark of funny?

Yes true, after seeing cat pictures over and over it gets boring then a new funny thing comes like owls but then they get boring and the cycle continues.

EDIT: Kinda like the random things at Endless paradigm, funny the first few times but now after seeing them over and over I don't find them very funny anymore nor are they random I guess.

But then, wouldn't you expect the fact that the oddity has lasted so long?  Wouldn't that be an oddity in itself?

Timeing is funny, Today i was in a gass station at the counter and this kid was mopping the floor behind me the his boss shouts over to him "wring the mop out more there is too much water on the floor" the kid shouts back "its fine" that second a third guy walks in and falls flat on his donkey!! classic, you had to be there i was the only other person in the store, it was like all for my benefit.:)

^That'd fall under the "stupidity" category.  Might not exactly be stupidity, but somewhat a combination of it :P
