vLite looks promising
Well, found Vista too bloated?  I did, and recently, I discovered vLite.  So I decided to give it a try, to see if it would allow me to save some RAM (as I'm considering whether to install Vista).
Results aren't bad.  After the initial install of Vista Lite (what I removed from Vista), RAM usage was about 350MB, an improvement on the 400MB I typically get.  Disabling unnecessary services and Aero got the RAM usage down to about 300MB.
Still a bit much, but interestingly, allocating and deallocating memory actually gave way to more physical RAM! :)

So, looks like Vista isn't taking up much more RAM than XP is...  after removing a lot of poo poo...

Meh, I guess you could upgrade to Vista if you wanted, but if XP is working fine, there's really nothing you're missing out on, unless you absolutely must need the Aero look.

Vista handles memory differently from XP

Vista actually preloads stuff to memory by guessing what program you would load.

So it grabs as much memory as it can but it does release it when another program needs it.

So I don't think Vista taking up alot of memory is that big of a problem.

I'm not upgrading. My mom just bought a laptop with vista, and i can't do anything on it. The lack of support from programs is very bad.

Easily "fixed" by disabling SuperFetch.

Plus, I said I allocated, then deallocated the RAM (which simulates usage).  That's how I freed and extra ~80MB.

RE: vLite looks promising
Vista initially takes up a crapload of RAM, even without SuperFetch.  Windows Indexing / Search seems to take up a heap - I removed it in my Vista Lite.

Eventually, drivers will be available...

RE: vLite looks promising
I dunno i always like a new windows version.
I read UMD tools do not work and if i would want to install Vista i would want 64bit and the suport on 64 bit is even more lacky..
I tried 64 bit xp and that was very fast..!!, at that time a just could not get many drivers and video codec's did not work then so i got back to 32bit xp..
I do not know what the problem is, Vista using to many ram, if you have 2 gig ram that is plenty enough or not!?
What i want to know is when buying a preinstalled vista labtop is it posible to install a xp onto the labtop. does removing the vista version..

I like a vista lite 64 bit but that's just not posible right now..

Make loads of $$!! it wurks!!

UMD Tools is... yeah.. won't work on Vista.
64 bit Vista shouldn't be much less compatible than 32 bit.  Use a 32 bit explorer on Vista x64, and you shouldn't have any issues, in general.

Vegetano1 Wrote:I tried 64 bit xp and that was very fast..!!, at that time a just could not get many drivers and video codec's did not work then so i got back to 32bit xp..
Video codes will work fine.  So drivers would be your only issue.  But most drivers should be working.  nVidia had 64 bit drivers for a _long_ time.  Dunno about ATI.  Not too sure when Creative came out with 64 bit drivers for SoundBlaster.  For integrated sound, the motherboard should really come with 64 bit drivers.

2GB is enough.  1GB is enough if you don't use much RAM, or are using vLite.
512MB - would not recommend.

Yes, you can remove anything :P
