Well, I'm taking Audio for Visual Media again (which I did the FLCL video last year) and wee need a video clip for a group project. I have the entire movie (Tron :p) in AVI on my computer, and it plays just fine in Media Player Classic, but whenever I bring it into Ableton Live, or Sony Vegas, it doesn't show the video. Ableton doesn't give me anything, and Vegas gives me audio. Windows Movie Maker plays it just fine. double you tee eff is going on here? I need a movie editor that will open this right, so I can cut it at the right places. D:
I'm gay.

If Sony Vegas is like Sony Sound Forge (which I highly suspect is the case), then it doesn't render through DirectShow or VFW which makes it really annoying to feed stuff into, if the file isn't a format specifically supported by Sound Forge...
Dunno a solution other than reencoding unfortunately - I guess you could try searching to see if there's some add-on or something to get it to read using system codecs than stupidly using their own.
MPC/WMP definitely renders via DirectShow. I would expect Windows Movie Maker to also render through MS's own DirectShow system.
