It just means there's a valid path and server is running, but doesn't say anything about TCP/UDP connectivity or whether games work... >_>

I seem to be able to get AoE2 to recognise Hamachi if I disable every other network though.

I've used Hamachi to play AoEIII previously (over the internet over 2 computers in the same house xD) and found the Ping to be an effective test. AoEIII connected very quickly upon entering the IP of the computer hosting the game.

I've also used it to play Halo & Monopoly Tycoon...

Halo was a lot more whiney... all players needed pretty much the same version, and connectivity problems were more evident. Though when a fully-connectable player hosted the game wee didn't have many problems other than the players who couldn't connect to that person - i.e. can't see that computer (so that player has something blocking Hamachi communications).

Monopoly Tycoon worked just fine.

In all three cases, more often than not it was Firewalls causing problems for players.

EDIT: You may have noticed already but you can select specific UDP/TCP Port to use in its Advanced Configuration - don't mess with it if you know your connections working, its a last resort, really... because it is most likely a firewall causing a problem.

There's a good chance you were actually connecting through LAN, or at least, not through a NAT device.

By the way:
Quote:Most people turn to use Hamachi for old DirectPlay 7 games. However if your router can port forward and you can configure it then you don't need Hamachi at all.
Most 1990-1999 games uses DirectPlay 7 for networking (eg. Age of Empires II, Die By The Sword, Total Annhilation, MageSlayer, Take No Prisoners, etc). If one is behind a NAT router and wants to host a game then they require to port forward DirectPlay 7 ports (range 2300-2400 plus 47624).
However some NAT routers are not capable of forwarding port ranges. It is still possible to host games behind a NAT router with only 3 or 4 ports forwarded (instead of the 2300-2400 range). The ports needed are TCP 2300, UDP 2350, & TCP/UDP 47624. This assumes this is the only DirectPlay 7 game running.
So don't need Hamachi for AOE2.

That was just one example. ^^

Well not everyone can configure the routers their internet connection is served on [School connections, for example] and anyone using USB Modems are stuck.

Though does that apply to the hosting game only? It would be interesting to try... though it would still be nice if wee can get players to use the network correctly.

I doubt you could even install Hamachi at school, and even if you could, they probably only expose a HTTP only proxy for internet.  Even if they do happen to expose everything, it's almost certainly going to be a NAT, unless they actually pay for an internet connection for every single computer.

Most games require connecting arbitrarily to players, so you're probably going to need to port forward.  I'm not too sure, but it's probably especially true for UDP as it's a connectionless protocol and thus the NAT device needs to know where to forward packets to.

If the USB modem is a NAT device, they probably give an option somewhere to port forward anyway.
