PS3 Slim!
Any reason I should stick with my fat PS3, pay $250 AUD to get it repair only to get a 3 month warranty or buy a new PS3 Slim for $500 AUD and get 12 months of warranty.

Basically I want to know the advantage of a Fat PS3 over a Slim.
I know Slim can't play PS2 games but I still have a PS2 for that, anything else?

Well, lets see.

You need to know/estimate...

1. The probability distribution for the survival time of your repaired fat. Let Pr(fat die,t) be the probability that your repaired fat will die at time t, in months, after you repaired it.
2. The probability distribution for the survival time of a new slim. Let Pr(slim die,t) be the probability that your new slim will die at time t, in months, after you bought it.
3. The amount of utility you gain from the extra features the fat has over the slim. Denote as U.
4. When the PS4 will come out. le this be time n.
5. The probability of you getting a PS4 when it comes out. Pr(get PS4)
6. The probability of the PS4 being backwards compatible. Pr(PS4 backwards compatible)
7. The probability of you reparing, as opposed to buying a new slim, if your console breaks again. Pr(repair)
8. The interest rate, continuously compounded over 1yr. Denote as r.

Wee assume that if your PS3 breaks, you will either repair or replace with another new PS3. OR if you already have a PS4 when it breaks, and it is backwards compatible, then you won't need to repair/replace it. Wee make this assumption to simplify things.

Expected future repair/replace cost of choosing the fat option --»  sum,t=12»n (Pr(fat die,t)*(Pr(repair)*250e^(-rt/12)+(1-Pr(repair))*500e^(-rt/12))) + sum,t=n»infinity (Pr(fat die,t)*((Pr(repair)*250e^(-rt/12)+(1-Pr(repair))*500e^(-rt/12)*(1-Pr(get PS4))*(PS4 backwards compatible)).

Expected future repair/replace cost of choosing the slim option --» sum,t=12»n (Pr(slim die,t)*(Pr(repair)*250e^(-rt/12)+(1-Pr(repair))*500e^(-rt/12))) + sum,t=n»infinity (Pr(slim die,t)*((Pr(repair)*250e^(-rt/12)+(1-Pr(repair))*500e^(-rt/12)*(1-Pr(get PS4))*(PS4 backwards compatible)).

If...

250 - U + Expected future repair/replace cost of choosing the fat option > 500 +Expected future repair/replace cost of choosing the slim option.

Then it's worth it to buy a new slim. Otherwise, it's not.

Yes, you need to do the calculations yourself. Because you'll never learn if someone else does it for you!!!

JOKING Although if you really want, you can try it too.

Being serious, I don't really think it's worth it to pay $250 extra just for 9 more months of warrenty.

Another thing:  PS3 SLIM will not allow you to "Install Another OS" option.   So no Linux...    :(

LOL!!!

but seriously theres not really any major differences between the fat and slim ps3's. And unless your planning on taking it down to the park and smashing it in with a croquet mallet, an extra warranty period shouldn't make all that $250 difference up

Spoiler for if you don't like pandas:

RE: PS3 Slim!
Okay so I got it, well the problem with Sonic Unleashed's graphics still occur (so the problem was the CD) but at least the disk reader doesn't make disks dirty and games shouldn't be randomly freezing.

So I'll probably have to get my Sonic Unleashed CD replaced.

Okay, double you tee eff, I'm still seeing polygons that don't render properly until I get close to them, what the hell is causing this?
It might be the save file that's the problem? Although I've experienced it on other save files.
