Just came across this: The Openmoko.

It seems to be a smartphone that's entirely open-source and is meant to be 'hacked' to your taste. They're about £200-£250 to buy from Europe and you then add the OS of your choice. This is what I've gathered so far from the limited reading I have done. I really like the look of this...

i don't like the design, but the concept is that of the Android phone taken to extremes. should be quite fast, 400MHz and 128MB RAM.

It does look a little strange. No keypad (but not really needed). Also no camera which isn't really a deal breaker but it would have been nice, even if it was a chocolatety little VGA one just for catching the random moments of isanity/awesomesauce where you wouldn't have a proper camera with you...

Considering the lack of camera it seems a little expensive for what it is... But then again it is totally open to modification...
