The Touchscreen craze
Nowadays, almost every second device seems to sport the touchscreen. It has become very common and affordable. MP3 players, phones, TV, PC, Entertainment device all have new entrants with touchscreen.

Common layman has begun understand fairly technical terms like captive and resistive interfaces etc, because of this "craze".

What I am interested in seeing is how long this lasts and where it leads to. Already wee have multi-touch and other interactive touchscreen control devices. I don't think it long before Adobe or Corel acknowledge this an launch a mobile version of photoshop and painter (officially, not third party software). WEE have many games coming for touchscreen enabled devices and many developers have taken up the challenge of creating free apps for the same. All in all, touchscreen devices have attracted so much attention that it has almost become a norm for a device to have touch to be acknowledged as a future ready device. Steadily and surely, non-touch devices are meeting extinction.. for better or worse.

Touchscreen is definitely the new direction the UI is going to take before 3D projection or at least projection take over - though that is still quite a while away.

What is your take on touchscreen?

Personally, while I enjoy it, I wouldn't want it on a phone. I really like clampshell phones (though they are almost near their demise - as demonstrated by the fact that no new flip phone has been launched recently and only a coupe are coming up. Its the "Slider-and-Touch" era), but that is mostly due to that fact that I don't really take good care of the screen, and a flip phone guarantees screen protection.

I have an iPhone, and personally, I really, really like the on-screen keyboard. I think it's the fact that you can just "put it away" as it were, to make room for other things onscreen, without adding any physical heft to the device. It makes the device really, really versatile for various uses. Plus, multi-touch control is just very intuitive, especially when designed as well as the iPhone, Pre, or Android. G1/G2And with the iPhone's keyboard and text correction, I can type loads faster than I ever could on a t9 number pad, which is what I used right before I got my iPhone.

Yes.. 3D projection... that will be pretty cool to see though.

I was mildly surprised to know that. But the current limitations of touchscreens would not make it into a good gaming console. Also, the incompatibilty with previous games. Not to mention the fact that there are practically no third-party software for the PSP, which are recognised by SCE. Though I am pretty sure that they will directly compete with DS at some point in future by having touchscreen console.

Would be nice to touchscreen your way thru the XMB,. ;) an does't mean all games have to have touchscreen suport,.
If sony stayed with original 3000k model the could have added touchscreen suport easily!

EDIT: i recall seeing a touchscreen modded PSP !

Yeah... I can safely assume that this is going to develop into something more grand.

Probably like the interface a few new SE phones have? However, I don't see the point of PSP being touch capable. But I guess its good to have options. However, I doubt a touch capable screen would be able to handle intense gaming.

RE: The Touchscreen craze
There's pros & cons about touchscreens.  I think it's mainly the novelty of it at the moment, but eh, maybe not.

Pros:
- as mentioned, basically the interface can be changed easily and taken away
- some things make sense with a touchscreen interface (ie drawing)
- if heavily reliant on touchscreen, allows smaller device since you don't need space for keyboards etc

Cons:
- fingerprints
- hand can obscure the view
- can't "feel" the interaction - ie I can press PSP buttons without looking, but this is more difficult to do with a touchscreen (you somewhat have to look where you're touching)
- on a similar note to the above, games, such as fighting games, wouldn't quite feel right on a touchscreen (button mashing? can't press screen as fast as you can buttons since you have to actually lift your finger; also kinda used to the feel of the button popping back up after you've pressed it)
- if you accidentally prod too hard?

All in all, I wouldn't like it for a video / gaming device.  Perhaps more useful for a phone / general purpose device.
I wouldn't use it on a computer either.

RE: The Touchscreen craze
I agree on pretty much everything said above...

Anyway, I've been thinking long and hard about getting a new phone (a Nokia 5800 Touch Screen Xspress Music). The only thing that has stopped my from actually buying the goddamn thing is worrying about breaking the screen. If I do then the whole thing is useless... I guess I'll just have to be careful...

RE: The Touchscreen craze
You really have to touch the screen,. maybe a pint touch thingy is to be invented!!

So basicly this topic is about how easy it is to find a touchscreen controlled device,. so i asume its not really hard to add touchscreen to any device,. i still think it would be nice if the PSP had touchscreen,. image scrolling the XMB!! Madwin

like ZInga said i totaly agree but fenicks said its nice to have the option,.(if its easy to add touchscreen tech)

RE: The Touchscreen craze
I agree with Zinga about the "physical" aspect of the touchscreen... among other things. For some reason, I tend to push the screen really hard occasionally just to be sure tht the touch was registered. Bad move for keeping the screen scratch free in the long run.
