Upgrading to Vista, have some questions
Well, after a crapload of research, I finally decided to upgrade to Vista. Now before everyone starts on their "Vista sucks" rants, just know that I did a lot of research and found that my computer was made specifically to run Vista (I got it from Dell a couple weeks before Vista came out)

Anyway, I was just wondering about some stuff. First, does it give you the option to install it and keep all the existing programs and stuff, or do I HAVE to format my drive? Also, how does the whole DreamScene thing work? And finally, anybody have a list of programs that work under Vista?

RE: Upgrading to Vista, have some questions
format, yes so backup your files. i started with a new machine under vista... there isn't anything worng with vista... it sort of reminds me of XP really. but that user control thing is very very annoying. so i turned it off...

Winamp will work
Photoshop will work
PSPs can connect to vista
Older Printers willnot work with vista

RE: Upgrading to Vista, have some questions
I updated to vista ultimate and it gave me the option to, So yes it does. but also I have seen cds that people have got when they bought computers from like wal-mart that wouldnt let them keep existing programs, but that was a vista home that came with a new computer.

Usually OEM CDs won't let you upgrade because they use some proprietary methods and software.

If you bought Windows Vista retail then you should be able to choose an option to upgrade I believe.

I best friend got a computer from wal-mart 2 weeks ago, when he got the computer all put together and turn it on it said wee had to enter the vista disk to install, so he did and the installer started and wee seen the option to put it would not lets you click on it (like faded out like they do) That vista cd that came with his cd only works if you full install.
Now im not saying that all vista cds that come in stores are like this, just that one was like that.

RE: Upgrading to Vista, have some questions
I didn't buy it, I obtained it just to see if it was really worth it before I bought it. So if I upgrade, I lose all my programs? If so, that would really suck cause I don't think I have an external drive big enough for all my stuff

That's because it was an OEM version.  For all of the options in one version (like choosing 32bit or 64 bit, full install or upgrade) you will need the Retail version, which is more expensive.  OEM versions are either upgrade or full install and either 32bit or 64 bit, but not all of the options together.

I'm not disappointed in you, I'm disappointed in myself, for believing in you.

Okay, I think I understand: If I choose to upgrade, I can keep all my programs, while if I do a full install, I format my drive.
