external hard drive troubles
When ever i turn it on, it connect to my pc, as normal, then, 10-15 min later, it disconnects, then another 10-15 min later, it reconnects. the whole time this is happening, it is on and has a connection. I have no idea what's up. I know i should have tried google, but i don't know what to call this problem

RE: external hard drive troubles
Is it one of the dual-power USB cables?
Make sure the double ended USB jack [data] is plugged in SECOND, AFTER the single-ended [and usually coloured] USB jack. This is for power and must be inserted first!
Or is it a single-style USB cable?

uhh, I'm not entirely sure what ur talking about, but it draws power from a power cord.

RE: external hard drive troubles
Sorry - the cord im talking about is for the 'smaller' 2.5 inch harddisk cases - i forgot that the standard 3.5 inch ones have a seperate power cable! For your information, the smaller ones draw power off the USB cord so they have two USB plugs [like a 'Y' cable] - one for power and other for data. For laptop users i guess.
Sorry for my misunderstanding/wasting ur time :(

RE: external hard drive troubles
Heh all good... Any luck? I'd start by trying a different cable - or try the same cable on another device. My guess is that it could be one of these things [or a combination if ur real unlucky]
1. Bad USB cable as amzter said
2. Bad USB controller on the PC [unlikely if other USB stuff works]
3. Power supply issue - either in the cord/powerpack or inside the box
4. The disk drive itself inside the unit might be failing
Hard to test unless you have a 'spare' of each of these to do the whole process-of-elimination thing.
Hope you sort it out - be sure to pot your results if you fix it or have another find.

RE: external hard drive troubles
check the harddrive for power saving options (did it come with any software, these should allow you to change the settings)
