Concatenating files should work with most file types, since they typically store the file length in the header of the file.

I'm a little dubious that opening the fake PNG file will work in an archiver though, since the file signature isn't even valid any more...

EDIT: Looks like WinRAR reads it - it seems to just search for the Rar! file signature.  I wouldn't guarantee that all other applications do it however.
