Yeah, different stages of school differ greatly. I'm in uni now, and I can say that in general, people are a lot friendlier and accepting than in highschool and before. Probably due to the fact that in uni, you interact with other people a lot more, and your friends a lot less, and so you adapt.

(For me at least), in uni you spend far less time hanging out with your friends and things like that. In highschool, everyone is together, same classes, same rooms, same everything, small campus, so you spend a lot of time with the same people. In uni, I won't even know where to find my most my friends most of the time. Lots of them do IT, I do actuarial studies (statistics/finance related), no classes together, lecture theatre = movie theatre, and it takes like 20 minutes to walk from one side of the campus to the other = I meet them like less than once a week.

But maybe that's just me. I guess if you do exactly the same subjects as your friends, then you'd still be always with them. And if your a really social person (which I'm not), you'd go find them to hang out together.

yeah exactly, and i feel bad in doing so

Felt a lot like that back then when I was like around year 7-8.

Nowadays, I don't really care about these kind of things. I do whatever I want. If people accept me, then all's good, maybe wee could be friends. If they don't want to accept me, then I won't accept them. I don't want me, I would never need them, the end.

But it's not like I go and reveal all my likes/dislikes hobbies and everything to everyone I meet. So almost no-one would know that I watch anime at all. As Zinga put it, anyone running around saying "i like to watch anime! w00t!" would be considered weird.
And so I wouldn't really end up in that accept/not accept position. Only people very close to me, or people who share the same hobby would really have a chance of figuring out. The 1st class is unlikely to betray me (even if they don't like it, they aren't going to reject me because of it. I don't like everything my friends do, but I don't dislike them for it. If they really do... then I chose my friends badly, and won't make the same mistake again). The 2nd class likes it too, so they obviously wouldn't reject me because of it.

Well I'm weird... LOL... admittedly I am weird.. I haven't been to a Public School since Primary School [actually I went to one here in Tenerife, a very small school for GCSEs, I never took them because I already left there, I wasn't learning much at all, and felt uncomfortable in the environment], I'm 16, and I still haven't done my GCSEs, in fact, I'm never doing them a this rate, I'm studying in the Young Applicants Program @ the Open University, hoping to work towards a Degree in ICT - this should get me some sort of Job.. oh wait right I need a Job to pay for my own education in 5 weeks, that should  be interesting, I have an awful sense of time, and back on topic, nobody actually knew I was watching Anime (a lot of it) after going to bed. Right now, my brother knows I watch a lot of Anime, my sister takes the piss all the time, and I think my parents know I watch some, but not that I've watched a Months worth, 70+ seperate titles... I'm not going to delve into the complexities of Socialism of today, but I know I've got some 'issues' with society I need to iron out, cause I'm not too well cut to fit in in this Spanish society that surrounds me right now.. *seclusion*

Just be yourself, Tetris, introduce your liking to Anime :p

RE: Is anime for asians?
lol @ thread i wish i was here earlier
I'm mexican and i like anime
in highschool i hardly saw anyone other than asians and white boys that liked anime, its not aimed for racial groups though, there is prolly just more fanbase for anime in those groups than other racial groups, also zinga is right about the asian generalization, the fanbase is bigger at its source, in this case with japanimation, asians :P
mexicans are more interested in getting their 15yr olds pregnant than watching anime so that's prolly why you don't see many mexicans, as is with so many other racial groups, they have other things to worry about more than anime, that doesn't mean there aren't people who'll like it and watch it though,
just be yourself, if you can't accept yourself then no one will, the biggest problem is always resolved at the roots, and you shouldn't feel embarrased about liking anime, also re:zinga's post about hiding it, you don't have any obligation to anyone to be telling them you like anime and then feel embarrased, its none of their business unless you let them know, and even then, what's so embarrasing about it? the people that'll make fun of these things the most are usually the most ignorant of all, in my eyes igonrance is more embarrasing than anything
also about blending into peoples generalizations, you shouldn't work hard for people unless its important, if their your real friends they'll accept you for who you are

yeah same here LOL..... i was lucky though... (im white for the record (welsh and irish decent)).. but my school had a japanese language course which i took all 4 years.. i was the only otaku... even my friend khan tran (yes i always said his whole name cause it was funny) looked at me weird for wearing Evangelion shirts and dressing in cosplay at school... id read manga and animerica and newtype at school too...  for the most part i found people don't really care as long as you don't act like it bothers you or that you sensitve about it... some people would even ask what manga im reading and generally sounded interested....
alls i can say is be who you want to be... race, color whatever doesn't matter.... if you like it then good for you.. that's what makes you you.... being white has never stopped me from listening to 90% japanese music and even when people are around on my loud donkey surround system... i look at it as i know two languages and they don't so haha..

RE: Is anime for asians?
No. Humans are free to choose what they like/dislike. So I like anime, and I'm Guyanese and American. And the fact I fall under the "weird" category.

RE: Is anime for asians?
Back to the first post:
I thought the same thing about anime. I'm not sure if any white or non-asian people in our school like anime. (There may have been one kid who did, but was actually really weird. Maybe even kinda screwed up. No offence to anime) But then again, wee have lots of asian people in our school. Probably at least half of our class is. Wee also have next to none black people. Mostly white or chinese.
Wee definitely have race things happening in our school. Not necessarily people being racist, but just things that kind of divide people. Wee have a small grade. 27 people maybe. Wee have about 11-12 girls in our class, and until a week or two ago, only 2 of them weren't asian.
Also, to the fitting in thing:
From what I see, I've noticed that as you get older through school, your race becomes more of an issue in terms of who you hang out with. Most people in our class know it too. When wee went to an orientation for our high school during the day, (I'm in grade 8) there was definitely groups separated by race. There was probably a large chinese or korean group, and a persian group too. Some guy that is in grade 9 know was hanging out with all persians, even though he didn't in grade 8.
Anyways, that's a white grade 8's opinion.

The other factor is that people aren't going to outwardly demonstrate their prejudices, usually.

For example, if they have a rooted belief that white people who read manga are idiots, it's unlikely that they're going to mention it as an adult, as opposed to when they're in high school.

Interesting point about racial separation, michaelp - it does seem to occur, but I've experienced quite a few mixed racial groups before.
