Teenager achieves nuclear fusion at home
[frame] ![[Image: fusion-device.jpg]](http://discovermagazine.com/2007/mar/radioactive-boy-scout/fusion-device.jpg) In 2006 Thiago Olson joined the extremely sparse ranks of amateurs worldwide who have achieved nuclear fusion with a home apparatus. In other words, he built the business end of a hydrogen bomb in his basement. The plasma "star in a jar"—shown at the left—demonstrated his success.
For two years, Olson researched what he would need and scrounged for parts from eBay and the hardware store. Flanges and piping? Check. High-voltage X-ray transformer? Check. Pumps, deuterium source, neutron bubble dosimeter? Check, check, check. “I have cross-country and track, so during those seasons I don’t have much time to work on it,

RE: Teenager achieves nuclear fusion at home
Holy poo poo. Nuclear fusion is very hard to obtain, people have been working very hard to make it into a commercial energy producing method, but haven't really been able to.
I also believe nuclear fusion, currently, can only be achieved through nuclear fission, meaning that he had to make a mini nuclear bomb to activate the reaction... :O

RE: Teenager achieves nuclear fusion at home
yeh maybe nuclear fusion isn't that hard to obtain anymore, but making it deliver more usable energy than you put in is the hard part

Apparently the hard part is containing the plasma. I've heard that they're looking into using magnetic fields to hold it.

O_o
I'm 18 in a month (17-04-1989). Learn this stuff in nuclear chemistry and physics at highschool :)q
Haven't tested IQ, but my guess is around 110-120.

I didn't know about that either. Well, the Sun is really one big nuclear fusion reation... (what most stars are).
