RE: ZiNgA's Quick Review thread
I'm bored. Comments next to the titles I've seen.

(23/12/2011 06:23 PM)Assassinator Wrote:  OK, here's a massive list of shit I have on my HDD but haven't watched yet.  I don't really want to download new stuff until I clear up at least some of that stuff.  Anyone want to make any suggestions on what to watch?

Aria The Natural < Still in the middle of this. Finding it too cheerful even though I don't think it's cheesy. Really got to be in the mood it.
Chobits < How the hell haven't you seen this yet?
Clannad After Story (not until I finish Clannad) < Watch it right after Clannad.
Da Capo Second Season (Didn't like Da Capo 1st season much) < If you didn't like the first season then stop. It's all more of the same and unless you like it - you won't enjoy it.
Da Capo 2 < See above
DOGS Bullets & Carnage < Seeing this soon actually.
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora < Despite the poor production values a brilliant watch.
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien OVA (not going to watch this until I re-watch the original, which is god knows when) < Good idea, that's what I did. I liked the OVAs, Zinga not so much.
Kimi no Todoke (I heard this is good) < Outstanding. You must have a stomach for romance because it's almost purely that.
Kodomo no Jikan (no I'm not watching this, I got it only to troll my sister) < I've seen much worse and on the loli scale its not earth-shattering. If your sister has heard of the contents of the OVAs however then that would be a troll.
Manabi Straight (Sensei liked this I think) < Sky did too. Fluffy slice-of-life about young girls having a good time basically. Very cheerful, happy stuff but nicely balanced with challenges they have to overcome as the school council. The first episode will probably test whether you'll like it or not. (My sister dropped it, lol)
NANA (heard this is good) < Sick of childish stuff? Watch this then. Targeted towards an older girls audience (note the art style) but definitely suitable for guys too - an excellent drama/romance with great music. Keep this high on your list.
Nodame Cantabile (has really high ratings) < Enjoyed this but gets monotonous to watch sometimes. Not enough happens for the length it runs for.
Nyan Koi < Silly, daft, yet utterly hilarious. One of the unusually outstanding comedy titles I've seen from seasonal anime watching and it's a crime it didn't get a second season.
Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (watched a few eps of this) < Personally found it annoying to watch.
Ouran High School Host Club < Undeniably funny but I hate to admit I enjoyed it.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei < You know how much I like this.
Shakugan no Shana II < I've seen a lot of stuff since then and I don't think I care for it as much as I did so I can't really comment.
Shuffle! < Same as above.
Spice and Wolf < Absolutely brilliant and I think you'll really enjoy it.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann < This has been an awkward one to recommend because the film deals with the very end sequence better than the original. Watch the series, then the second film. Basically an epic mecha anime that'll leave you ultra-motivated to defeat anything.
Winter Sonata < The Korean voice acting is refreshing after all the Japanese voices and its brilliant production and realistic story wraps together to make a very good drama romance worth watching.

Here's the list of the shit that my sister has, that I haven't watched yet, which I can also watch...  I have no fucking idea what 2/3 of that stuff is about or whether they are any good.

Aoi Bungaku < Excellent but VERY dark series of stories.
Arakawa Under the Bridge < Hilarious comedy that features something very unusual - a second season better than its first.
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (watched some episodes, then the show pissed me off) < Then don't watch it.
Bamboo Blade < I'll be rewatching this soon because I remember me enjoying it so much.
Bokura ga Ita < You've got so many more romance options to choose over this you should just forget about it for now. Poor production wrapped around a cliched story that lasts too long. People like it - probably because they haven't seen better.
Durararara!! < I review it here > http://www.weareanimeted.com/2010/06/26/...ikebukuro/ < Basically, watch it.
Ergo Proxy < This got hard to watch because of its pacing but it is a quality production that is worth watching.
FLCL < Bonkers, but very good anime that you should watch after Gurren Lagann
Haruhi Season 2 (heard this is like, lets repeat 8 episodes trololol and I'm not going to watch it) < Covered this in above post.
Higurashi, When They Cry < I thought the same when I saw Chobits on the list - how the hell haven't you seen this anime?
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha / A's / StrikerS < Watch if you don't mind magical girls cause its nowhere near as cheesy as they tend to be. Good action and drama but overall quite light-hearted. Film adaptation of first season is excellent.
Midori Days < Funny stuff, watch when you fancy a quirky comedy.
Minami-ke < What Eku said. Very funny slice of life about three sisters and a safe option "when you just fancy watching something". There are some dud episodes in later seasons though.
Mnemosyne < Serious, adult anime (nudity, sex) but with a moderately interesting plot. First episode is the best one.
Special A < Dropped this. Boring stuff that overuses typical comedy elements from an overworked plot.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I watched the 1st episode back then when it aired (when Hearty was raving about it), and remember that episode to be pretty good, unfortunately never went any further at that point.  But yeah, I definitely do plan on returning to it.

(24/12/2011 04:56 AM)ProperBritish Wrote:  Also yes, Minami-ke is awesome, havent seen second series though.

That's 3 people mentioning this to be good now, so I'll keep that in mind.  Honestly that surprised me though, I though it would be some really generic average stuff like 12314122 other shows out there.

Some of the endings to the first season was good, but I found the whole early and middle sections to drag on and be really boring.

Some years ago, I slotted a DVD of this into her birthday present.  Lol.

Pretty much watched all the way to the end of the first inter-class battle (or whatever it's called).  Everything was going fine and all, but then this boss guy (which was previously set up to be the smart mastermind type) just looses at the very last moment, not via some great struggle, just like, 'oh shit sorry I forgot to tell you I'm actually dumb', and proceeds to turn into a masochist or something.  That was like 3 whole episodes of lead in, into the most unsatisfying result, so I was like, wtf have I been watching, and stopped.  I might get back to it eventually, but not any time soon, don't feel like it now.

(24/12/2011 05:49 AM)S7* Wrote:  Chobits < How the hell haven't you seen this yet?

Seen a bit of it, back then when I still borrowed DVDs off the public library to watch anime (that was like 8years ago or something).  Problem with borrowing DVDs is that sometimes it's hard to get the whole let, because it's always loaned out (or some retard managed to scratch the disk to the point of being unwatchable).  So that's the reason for a lot of stalled anime from way back then... Evangelion, D.N.Angel, Gungrave, Tenjou Tenge, Wolf's Rain and some other unfinished stuff in the list also fall into the same category.  Some stuff like Fruits Basket I actually went back and finished, others I haven't gotten to yet.

I'll probably give it a try sometime.  Well I'm slightly different to normal anime watchers in that I watch pretty much everything, except for yaoi stuff and kids stuff like digimon, and really LONG shounen stuff.

Kirino is annoying?  Yeah I agree.

Sister seems to like this... probably because she's a girl and this is a shoujo show.

It works on very simple things. Its delightful and makes you laugh so that makes it a success for its genre without having to rely on moeblob or cliched storylines.

With Chobits, if you can't stand the bland ecchi related stuffs, you've got to look over it to see some of the underlying ideas - although that does mean the first few episodes will be a turn off.

JB HiFi (Australian tech discount store) selling the Chobits Bluray pack for $28 (with free delivery if you order it today, the 25th) - not a bad deal for 24 episodes, if you don't mind paying.
I don't have a BD player of any sorts so I won't pick that up, probably would otherwise.
Also, JB's selling a number of anime DVDs for $4 each until new years.

Don't have a BD player either, though it should be cheap to get one these days.

I probably won't ever buy anime DVD here because the method they convert frame rates from NTSC to PAL doesn't sit well with me.  I don't know if BDs go through this stupid conversion process, probably not if I were to guess.  They should just use PAL telecine instead of irreversible blend conversion.  Actually, what kind of piece of shit TV these days can't play both formats? - they should just leave it in NTSC.

I also started watching Kodomo no Jikan, I was told that it's a heart-warming, coming-of-age slice of life anime.

Ok 1 month later and I finished it.

It was bad, that's all I have to say about it. 4/10

lol. fell for what ?

I was joking about the heart warming slice of life anime thing, I already knew it was going to be mostly just loli fanservice, but still, it was just bad. And then there's this drama, it just didn't fit in. No sir, I did not like this.
