Before you do anything else, head back to Viridian City and check the route to the west (the one that heads to the Pokemon League), there's some grass there.  If you get a Mankey, it'll make things easier against Brock.

not that much exp, though, as the only trainer out there is the Rival.  And the pokemon out there are fairly weak.

Maybe I was lucky, but I managed to beat Brock with just a level 11 Butterfree, without using any items.
Just used Harden 3-4 times when Geodude is out (he was using Defense Curl all the time, so didn't affect Butterfree anyway, though Butterfree could probably stand a few hits from Geodude, allowing you to heal if necessary), then just sPa/\/\ Confusion.  Onyx didn't do much damage from all the Hardens.
But on a run like this, you'd probably want to be a bit more certain though - I just couldn't be stuffed training.
Looking at your run though, Mankey probably works better.

Misty is a tricky one to beat though.  Water Pulse seems to do quite a bit of damage to a level 20 Pikachu.
