I do it squatting.
You see, neither of the choices are optimal.

Sitting down - things in the way.
Standing up - your donkey cheeks tend to squeeze in the upright position, making it less comfortable to do the job. Unless you're doing a spready, but then, this requires you to take off your pants completely.

Next time, I shall try doing it lying down.

sitting for me but I used to wipe my butt standing when I was younger... :P

maybe I should rotate, see which one feels better... xD
