PS3 Service Mode Via PSP

DO NOT TRY AND USE THIS ON PS3 FIRMWARE 3.56!  YOU WILL BE FOREVER STUCK IN SERVICE MODE!

NOTE- This is not a jailbreak using a PSP.  This only will put your console into service mode for downgrading / repairing.

TI-84+ guru BrandonW has once again pleased the PS3 scene, this time releasing a PSP app. that will put PS3's with firmware 3.55 (and lower) into service mode, used for downgrading PS3s.  You may know there are other ways to put a PS3 into service mode but none using the PSP.  Here is the README and the FAQ's :

Spoiler for README.txt:
README Wrote:PS3Jig v1.0

Brandon Wilson

>What is it?

This is a small PSP application compiled with PSPSDK to make the PSP show up as the Sony PS3 USB "jig stick" used by (presumably) official Sony repair centers.

In combination with leaked lv2diag.self files, you can use this to downgrade any PS3 from firmware version 3.55 (or lower) to a lower version.

DO NOT RUN THIS ON FIRMWARE VERSION 3.56!!! THERE IS CURRENTLY NO KNOWN WAY TO GET OUT OF FACTORY/SERVICE MODE FROM FIRMWARE VERSION 3.56!!!

DO NOT RUN THIS unless you are aware of the risks and are willing to take them.

>How do I use it?

Copy the "PS3Jig" folder to the \PSP\GAME\ folder on your PSP.

Once on the PSP, go to the "Game" menu in the XMB and select "PS3 Jig."

>I got an error! I can't run it! What do I do?

Honestly, I don't know. I'm not a PSP developer, I can't help you with specific error messages or problems.

>What firmware version can I be on or do I need to be on to run this?

Honestly, I don't know. I run it on my PSP-1001 firmware version 5.50 GEN-D.

>Known Bugs/Issues

It hangs when trying to exit, and the only way to get out of it is to pull the battery. I have no idea why.

>How can I e-mail you to express my undying gratitude?

brandonlw@gmail.com.

>How can I e-mail you to ask you something already mentioned here?

You can't.

>What's this "source" folder all about?

If you don't know, ignore it.

>How do I compile the source?

Download and install PSPSDK to C:\PSPSDK\ and run build.bat in the \source\ folder.

>How do I change the dongle ID from 0xAAAA to something else?

Change the DONGLE_ID constant in usb.c to whatever you want and re-compile (see above).

>How can I send you a DMCA takedown notice?

brandonlw@gmail.com.

>If I did, would it be a waste of time?

No, I would thoroughly enjoy it.

>Where is the latest copy of the source?

http://brandonw.net/svn/pspstuff/PS3Jig/.

Spoiler for FAQ's:
FAQ's Wrote:PS3Jig is a homebrew program for the PSP that emulates the official Sony "jig" stick for entering Factory/Service mode. All you need to do is attach a USB cable between your PS3 and PSP, run the program, and turn on your PS3, just like any other downgrade/service mode method.

AS OF THIS WRITING, THERE IS NO WAY TO EXIT FACTORY/SERVICE MODE ON PS3 FIRMWARE VERSION 3.56, SO DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THIS ON PS3 FIRMWARE VERSION 3.56 UNTIL YOU READ OTHERWISE ELSEWHERE!

Keep in mind that I'm not a PSP developer, and that I know very little about homebrew for it; my ability to answer questions about how to run it and troubleshoot any issues is severely limited.

This application is open source and has no license attached to it, so you're free to do whatever you want with it; but please don't slap your name on it and call it your own, it's just rude.
Frequently Asked Questions

What's the main purpose of this?
To enter Factory/Service Mode on your PS3 using your PSP. This is typically used to downgrade your PS3's firmware version to something that supports homebrew/backups, or you can use it to unbrick some PS3s from a firmware flash gone bad.

Will this cause any permanent damage to my PSP?
Not that I know of, but don't blame me if it does.

Do I need a special cable for this?
No, you just need a standard A«>mini-B USB cable. Among many other uses, it's the cable used to charge/sync PS3 controllers. You have one of these.

What firmware version does my PS3 need to be on for this to work?
As of this writing, you need to be on firmware version 3.55 or earlier. DO NOT USE IT ON FIRMWARE VERSION 3.56 OR HIGHER UNTIL YOU READ OTHERWISE ELSEWHERE.

What firmware version does my PSP need to be on for this to work?
Honestly, I don't know. This requires kernel mode, so as of this writing (and to the best of my knowledge), version 6.35 or lower. It runs on my PSP-1001 5.50 GEN-D.

I get an error when I run it on the PSP! What's wrong?
I really don't know.

How do I get this on my PSP?
The same way you do with any other PSP homebrew. Do some reading and/or googling.

It didn't work! What's wrong?!
Try it multiple times. I have noticed through a hardware USB analyzer that sometimes the PSP doesn't send the jig challenge response correctly, despite the PSP saying it did.

Will this work on the PSP Slim? 2000? 3000?
I honestly don't know.

It locked up my PSP when I tried to exit! Why?
I honestly don't know. Pull the battery, re-insert it, and turn it back on.

What tools did you use to compile/build this?
PSPSDK.

Where's the latest source at?
http://brandonw.net/svn/pspstuff/PS3Jig/trunk/.

What dongle ID does this use?
0xAAAA. It can easily be changed and re-compiled in the source. I didn't provide a UI for it because it's unlikely anyone will ever need to change it.

You know, you're really late on this.
I don't care.

I thought you said this couldn't be done! And yet here it is, prick. What's with the lying?
I said you couldn't implement the PSGroove/PSJailbreak exploit on it, and that's still true. Emulating the Sony official jig stick for Factory/Service Mode is different, and the PSP can do it. I didn't see anyone else doing it, so I did.

How can I scream at you / profess my undying love / throw money at you via PayPal / give a simple thanks / etc.?

Very nice, I'm glad even more devices now can be used to hack the PS3.

That is to get into restore mode not service mode. Service mode can only downgrade 3.50 to 3.41 and you can loose the ability to play blue ray movies, maybe not with this?

It can also downgrade from 3.55 and the blu ray playback lost is only on the models that have ps2 support. The slim and all other version of the ps3 that don't have ps2 support are safe.

It can put 3.55 into service mod, but downgrade it? Are you sure? That would be very nice since I'm 3.55 and would like to use the full Linux that was added to 3.41. I will have to look into this when I get back from Las Vegas

Yes, it can downgrade from 3.55 to below firmwares.  and also, some people seem to think that's this will jailbreak a PS3, IT WILL NOT JAILBREAK A PS3!!  THIS ONLY PUTS A PS3 INTO SERVICE MODE! NOT JAILBREAK!
