RE: Sony Sues fail0verflow & geohot!
I'm interested in the suggested action though - seems that they only want to stop the defendants' distributing the exploits, which are:
Quote:The Circumvention Devices distributed by Defendants enable users to circumvent or disable the TPMs in the PS3 System: Hotz’s Metldr Keys, dePKG Firmware Decrypter, 3.55Firmware Jailbreak code and Signing Tool
So even if they totally win the case, the only thing that will occur will be an injunction against them distributing those. It'll also be easier for Sony to obtain similar injunctions against other parties, but, as it's already out there, this would be difficult.

Does the law allow this though? They didn't actually distribute any pirated material. One would imagine that places such as torrent sites would be liable for that...

RE: Sony Sues fail0verflow & geohot!
fail0verflow has not released any sony code/key/copyrighted code and they are still planing on releasing all planed tools.
Carnegie Mellon Professor Dave Touretzky, a Research Professor in the Computer Science Department and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition at Carnegie Mellon University has stuck up for geohot and is Mirroring geohots site on the University's .edu server. The Mirrors can be found here- http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/GeoHot/
Quote:Mirror of GeoHot's PS3 Jailbreak
January 11, 2011:
Our friends at Sony are having another bad day: i.e., doing something breathtakingly stupid, presumably because they don't know any better. This time they're suing George Hotz for publishing PS3 jailbreak information, as reported by EnGadget, Attack of the Fan Boy, and inevitably, Slashdot. Hotz's jailbreak allows PS3 owners to run the software of their choice on a machine they have legally purchased. His site is geohot.com.
Free speech (and free computing) rights exist only for those determined to exercise them. Trying to suppress those rights in the Internet age is like spitting in the wind.
Wee will help our friends at Sony understand this by mirroring the geohot jailbreak files at Carnegie Mellon.

Note to Sony lawyers: no doubt you're eager to rack up another billable hour by sending legal threats to me and my university. Before you go down that unhappy road, check out what happened the last time a large corporation tried to stop the mirroring of technical information here: The Gallery of CSS Descramblers. Have you learned anything in ten years?
