Why glossy screens on portable devices?

Why glossy screens on portable devices?
I've always wondered why so many portable devices have highly reflective glossy screens.  It seems like a silly idea to me, especially since these screens are LCD and reflective screens only help reduce the effectiveness of LCD in brighter environments.

If I wanted to see my own face, or the sun/random light reflecting back, I'd use a mirror.

And videos such as these, you can clearly see blocks of light reflecting back, and I find this rather disturbing.

Ignoring the reflectiveness of these screens, glossy touch screens also attract fingerprints.

Is it really because these shiny screens look better, that they keep getting made?

gp2x wiz, (along with most gph products) have just an led (on few) or an lcd screen and no shiny plasticness over them

oh just a bare lcd? that's still shiny, ive opened quite a few portable devices...

and just leaving the lcd exposed is a terrible idea.
