It actually works though, though probably not the smartest things to try on steam accounts (works better for stuff like MMOs where there are lots of pre-teen kids).
Phishing is only a slightly higher social engineering scam anyway.

Phishing is done by a computer, to a vast amount of people at once.  This is done by you spending your time and effort, to 1 person at a time.  Phishing is obviously much much superior.

It's also much more difficult to set up, and easier to trace.
If you're playing against some random person, you can easily just ask for their password.  It's also more engaging and perhaps thrilling on a level.

You think it was unsecure?

The login screen is from Steampowered - which is legit - and says:

Quote:By linking your Steam account,  http://www.garrysmod.org will be able to identify you within the Steam Community and retrieve your public gameplay information (such as stats and achievements).

Linking your account involves sending a unique, numeric identifier to http://www.garrysmod.org. Steam will not reveal your username or password. You should never enter your Steam login credentials into a third party website!

What did "verification" involve exactly?

RE: Well... Damn
Got a reply from Steam Support, they wanted me to write the Support Ticket ID next to the key and to send another Photo. Did that, seems like I could get it back^^

Anyways, the verification needed me to set up a unique name for my community page and then post a generated code in my Steam Profiles "About me" part.
Nothing seemed fishy but that must have made it easier for account hackers to hijack my account.

My password doesn't correspond any known word in the slightest so I doubt it was machine hacked.

Keylogged then, maybe.

At least they show they at least care, which is nice :) (wouldn't expect most large services to care)  Sucks to happen to you though.

Damn, feel sorry for you. And just after the steam summer sale finished, too.
Best of luck recovering the acc.

RE: Well... Damn
Thanks guys!^^ Well I doubt it's a keylogger since a quick Google search showed there are at least two more cases of lost Steam Accounts right after verification at garrysmod.org. Coincidence? I don't know and I have no suspicious process running, guess I will also check all loaded modules just to be sure^^

Phishing is done by a computer, to a vast amount of people at once.  This is done by you spending your time and effort, to 1 person at a time.  Phishing is obviously much much superior.

Perhaps the main reasoning behind doing it in this manner is to be able to get the rise out of the person, more than it is for the account information. No matter how they go about it, there are just plain douchebags out there, and there will always be. With the internet becoming more and more common in households, it is only giving these douchebags another means of causing hell for others, thus making their douchebaggery more apparent.  Then again, I don't have a lot of sympathy for many of the people out there (not directed at Sky), as many of them are so dumb, losing their account is the only way they'll learn. No matter the case, a fool and his money (or account) are soon parted.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, Sky. I hope all turns out well for you ^^
