Room effects?
Well, long story short, I want to have the opinion of EP on something^^
Since last tuesday my mum is out of the country on a class reunion and she will come back tomorrow.
I took the opportunity and moved my PC to the living room next to the window, also I sleep on our gigantic living room couch.

Even since then I noticed I feel way more cheerful, feel generally healthier and heck I even start humming out of the blue^^' Our living room is large and bright compared to my own room.

Can a room really have that much of a effect on a human being?

I admit my room is a mess and rather dark since it only has a skylight window and if I leave the blinds fully open it simply gets too bright. I never really cared about my room too since it was always a place for me to house my bed, my stuff and my Anime posters xD

But now I think of really renovating my room... the thing is, more then 50% of the space gets killed by the diagonal ceiling and minus the area under the skylight it's pretty dark, the space under the diagonal ceiling is almost depressing... Plus, the room is small in the first place

So yeah, I'm looking forward to my mum coming back tomorrow, however I almost feel depressed by the thought of going back to my room...

Any ideas, comments, whatever?^^

RE: Room effects?
If you do any serious renovation paint it a light color use light colored carpets. Just light colors in general. Maybe get some low voltage halogen lights in the dark bit of the room to lighten it up. Also if you're short on space you could try and fit a captain's bed in there. They're like a bunk bed but with only the top bunk. The bottom bunk consists of a desk and a futon. I don't know if you'd be able to fit it in there though as you said about a sloped ceiling. You could just try putting a normal bed in the lowest part of the room and keeping the tall-space for other stuff. The lowest part, as you said is the darkest part so why not sleep in it?

Just a few ideas taken from my pitifully small room.

RE: Room effects?
Yeah, man. The environement you work on can have an effect on how you feel. It falls under the purview of Ergonomics, I reckon.
It's all about having a well-lit, comfortable area to work/game in. The less your body has to subconciously adjust (so, ambient light same as screen light, no glare, comfortable ambient temperature, etc.) the better you'll feel.
It's not unlike the difference between sitting in a lazyboy and some stupid plastic chair. You're sitting either way, it's just a case of how comfortable you'll be while doing so.

RE: Room effects?
If you stay in your room with the windows closed for a long time... (I mean a very long time... i spent a good year locked up in my room doing homework in-front of my laptop screen...) can cause you to become depressed...

Since I spent along time though I constantly had suicidal thoughts ^^

You shouldn't be having that problem though... :D

Over at the ferrari factory they have windows and plants everywhere to keep the workers happy... maybe you should stick a plant in your room ^^

RE: Room effects?
I have 2 big windows that go from the top to bottom of the room. The sunlight almost is never seen cause of the big tree I have right there. [] []

I also have a "Let it Be" poster from the Beatles and a Stewie poster behind my computer on the wall.

I feel more depressed going to bed than going to my computer cause I don't have a lot of posters and most of em' are behind. Also my room is kinda big and designed to fit a closet. :V

I also have a big family and the macbook is usually in the living room where my sisters constantly check on myspace/facebook/twitter/date sites and all that.

Even if the living room were to be empty and was sure of it for a day, i'd still stay in my room. :3~~

Maybe the let it be poster+tree makes me happy?? Im no expert at these kinds of things...but I would get a puppy hehe. Specky

Also a pretty desktop always helps. Woo

RE: Room effects?
i had prefer a very large room,. i also did use light carpet but take note light carpet also stains easily,. i am a 1 man house-hold,. things can get very sloppy,. slobby and all of the above,. but i manage somehow,. but still i do now need a new carpet or floor-board,.

i had once had a room with a diagonal ceiling and there was almost only room for a bed,. hehe i had still liek that room,. hehe mebbe i go sleep there sometime soon again,.

there is a science about how to make the best room for yourself,. but i can't recall the name,. mebbe this>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feng_shui

Yes, plants are good. If you're lazy get a cactus as they're pretty impervious to negligence. Hell, the last time i watered mine was last year and it's still alive and well. Just make sure to put it somewhere that will get daylight.

RE: Room effects?
Thanks for the comments so far, I will see what I can do though I only have till 11am tomorrow morning in this "paradise" and the more time advances the more I fear I will fall into a depressive phase once I'm back in my own room... hack I even get depressive feeling if I'm in it now...

Here's a comparison.... I never cared for my room since wee moved here 9 years ago, never renovated or anything.... this sloped ceiling just killing everything I could do...

And here my current 1 week living room setup which makes me feel like heaven:
