Partition Software Help
Tell me, does GParted delete any data on the original partition when you split it off to make a new one?

RE: GParted Help
Come on, doesn't anyone know?

I really need to know before I use it because I have important files on my hard drive and not enough space on my external drive to back them up, so if it in fact does format the source disk, then I'm hosed if I don't know beforehand.

RE: GParted Help
Never used GParted, but ALWAYS treat partition resizing with caution.

Firstly, don't split or do any fancy thing - RESIZE the partition.  If that works, then continue making another partition.

But as I said above, there's always risk of it stuffing up, and the risk ain't that low, so it's always best to back up beforehand.

RE: Partition Software Help
Well, do you know of a good partition software that doesn't have a high risk of fudgeing up your files? If so, could you give me or point me to instructions to do it correctly without deleting my existing files?

RE: Partition Software Help
Partition magic works pretty good. As Zinga Burger said, there's always a chance of screwing up files if you're changing partition tables when there's data on them.

Partition magic has only screwed me once when I've resized partitions with data on them, and I've used it many times. It's probably about as stable as you can get for a partition manager.

When it asks you to make the floppy recovery disks, maybe you should if you're really worried...

Can anyone give me or point me to step-by-step instructions to make another partition without deleting anything? Google is no help. It just gives me product reviews and company websites

RE: Partition Software Help
I don't know about howtos, but the program is pretty simple to operate.

First, to make a new partition, you have to have unpartitioned space.
To get unpartitioned space, you need to resize one of your current partitions and make it smaller.
Then, on the unpartitioned space that you freed, make your new partition.
Apply settings and let the computer reboot and do it's thing, while crossing your fingers ;)
