Cool idea
Okay, I was looking at the task manager a few minutes ago, and I noticed that explorer is a user process. It got me thinking. What if someone could code their own explorer.exe? Then wee replace the old one, and, Voila! You have a custom interface with your windows computer! By the way, if this is a really stupid idea, someone just tell me.

RE: Cool idea
well people can customize each aspect of xp with 3rd party apps
but i don see how a new explorer could change anything much that can't already be done by other methods

RE: Cool idea
not to mention i don't think windows will boot without explorer.exe. however it should be possible to unload the process after boot and then run a custom made interface. but seriously - why bother? theres alternatives that change what you already have and they do it well too. or if you really want to take a walk on the wild side try linux :P

Always remember - Google is your friend :)

RE: Cool idea
explorer.exe powers both the desktop (icons, not wallpaper) and the startmenu as well as the actual explorer filemanager (unless your settings specify otherwise, in which there are multiple instances of the same executable file).

Shell replacements :P

Well, I've found explorer that comes with Windows to be generally the best.  Another one that used to be good is LiteStep.
Talisman is WAY too resource taxing.  Aston is okay, but I prefer explorer.
