[UK Xmas No1] Killing in The Name - RATM
Over the past week, 500,000 people have bought Rage Against The Machine's 1992 song 'Killing in the Name' to protest the monopoly of 'The X Factor' becoming Christmas Number 1 in the Singles Chart.

Over the past 4 consecutive years, The X Factor, a reality TV show pitting real people against each other for a record contract managed by Simon Cowell has created the Christmas Number 1. This year, a facebook group spoke out against this and asked people to buy RATM's decidedly angry song to try and overthrow the X Factor's Xmas No1 reign.

Joe McElderry, the winner has released a cover of Miley Cyrus' 'The Climb'.

In the end, the winner of X Factor 2009, Joe McElderry lost to Rage Against the Machine by some 50,000 sales.

The metal song has broken two records, becoming the first download-only song to become number 1, and the best-selling download song in one week ever.

and for reference, here are the two songs.

I, myself bought a copy of RATM's song on iTunes... sadly i had to sell Joe McElderry's song to people at work today >_>

I'm glad it won, shows the true power Facebook has over the norm, say the guy from essex never made the group and no one ever thought about it this year wee would (almost) all be listening to some kids rendition of a song written by Jessi Alexander and Jon Mabe, but now, wee get to listen to a song which doesn't sound like the radio friendly song (pottentially) and simon cowl has been shown he can't release any old poo poo and expect people to like it, now that it's been done once, what stops it from being done again?

however, the whole radio poo poo doesn't affect me, i gave up on the radio a long time ago, it's all poo poo around here

To be completely honest though, people only did it to speak out

Next year, next x-factor, next number one, poor kid was a victom of losing his only chance at having a popular song before he getsa forgotten, something every other winner has enjoyed. I kinda feel sorry for him, except that he called Killing in the Name poo poo...ergo, he is tasteless

Pah, if he puts the effort in, he could become big, look at leona lewis, she's done well, it's all about where he goes from now, xfactor was the easy bit. if he's affected by not getting a novelty award like the xmas number one then he's not going to do well as an artist.

How the hell should i know, you think i intend to listen to it??

Im not going to judge it and call it poo poo, but im going to assume i won't like it

And Leona Lewis was the exception rather than the rule, and even she isn't doing hugely well, just better than most X-Factor finalists.

the xfactor isn't that much different from big brother, sure it's slightly more fun to watch but in the end, some poor person is given a big some of money and a chance at fame, but because it's thrown at them so fast they all fail
