its more developer friendly, plus its really easy to fix errors because i can have the default runlevel set to 3, and fix any errors with ease, whereas if i had kubuntu and got this error, i would be stuck because i wouldnt have the option to change the default runlevel. plus, its the closest you can get to a "generic" os, so i can add only what i want (developer packages, specific sets of programs, etc) i get no dependency checking, which saves a lot of greif, and i can compile any app with ease, thanks to all the headers preexisting. I also like that its a base linux core, so updating the kernel is really easy, instead of installing extra stuff like in debian with all the modules and extensions on the kernel...

Here a few I tried...

Ubuntu (liked it, Gnome was quite nice, had WiFi problems though)

Kubuntu (prefer it over Ubuntu, no wireless problems, plenty to sink your teeth into out of the box and Adept works well......... when it works and not get stuck)

Symphony (completely sucked, out of date now as well)

SUSE (bit bloated IMO)

SLAX (portable, but out of date now, Puppy is a better alternative)

... and MEPIS (I had a mysterious love for this distro... its LIVE CD has saved me a multitude of times, a lot worked out of the box with older versions, too)

yeah... i got an ubuntu live cd which i used to use. it can auto detect my wlan0, and connect with out a word from me. it was convenient to be able to pop in a cd and google for a quick fix. i eventually switched to slackware for the previously stated reasons, plus a desire to learn linux, and now i can fix most errors quickly since my default runlevel is 3 and that *always works

this error stumps me though... (and the hard working individuals on linuxquestions.org as well)

the error doesn't seem to be with the distro, that's the thing. the error is with hal. which means its most likely a combination of my xorg.conf files, and the detection of hardware. So theoretically, the error COULD occur in Kubuntu, in which case, i wouldnt be able to use the keyboard or mouse, and would be stuck without a way out.

it took 6 days because i was taking my time, juggling it with classes and other things. plus, i had it configured on the 2nd morning. i just spent a lot of time getting the packages and programs i wanted, and theming it.
