SLACKWARE
i just installed slackware on my linux partition, and wiped ubuntu off. but now, i can't figure out how to configure the wlan, or the graphics card, or the ethernet, for that matter. and my bluetooth mouse won't work. So, i have to boot my windows partition, go online, google for possible solutions, WRITE THEM DOWN MANUALLY!!, and then boot slackware and try them out. and guess what? THEY NEVER WORK! i guess i just have to keep on trying, i really want to have a customized slackware machine...

RE: SLACKWARE
Why did you want to change from Ubuntu?
Drivers are a pain - that's all I can really say.  You could save the files onto a USB instead of writing them down though?
PSP should work if anything.

RE: SLACKWARE
i wanted to change from ubuntu because i wanted to have a more UNIX-like os. but this is a bit over my head, im having trouble doing alot of the stuff in there. i guess nothing teaches like necessity though... these drivers are a nightmare. when i go to network devices in the KDE menu, it shows both my eth0 card and my wlan0 card as disabled. when i enable my wlan0 card, i don't know how to connect to my wireless network, and so i can't go online with my machine. if i could just get online, im sure id get everything running rather smoothly in a matter of hours...

RE: SLACKWARE
hmm.

not a very wise move, Trademark.

Going from Ubuntu to Slackware is indeed like going into the very deep end.

Looking at the Distros at http://distrowatch.com/ might help you find a distro you'd be more comfortable with.

RE: SLACKWARE
since both the cards show up in the KDE menu, that means the drivers are installed, right?

RE: SLACKWARE
Can't help you with your network problem, sorry (not really a Linux user).  Can only really suggest checking the network configuration, wherever that happens to be stored.
Does "ping localhost" work?

Otherwise, it's probably easier to install it on a VM first, since you're only really interested in getting used to it.

RE: SLACKWARE
ping localhost doesn't work... Im sure trial and error will get it eventually... Plus theres a new release. maybe this one will have updated drivers, which would make everything a lot easier. Well, im off to blunder hopelessly for a while. *Trademark91 readies his weapons for battle and ventures into the great unknown*

the brand spanking new v13?

well you'd think it'd be a better all-round distro with its newer componants..

yeah, im downloading it now... im going to get the 64 bit version, my processor can support it, so why not? and, hopefully, after a while ill learn it. after all, "if you learn redhat, youll know redhat. if you learn slackware, youll know linux"  that's what im shooting for... wish me luck.
