RE: Anime - Subs or Dubs?
it usually depends on what I watch first.

Elfen Lied, I watched in subbed, and tried to watch it dubbed, but the voices bothered me.

FLCL, I watched it first on Adult Swim, so it was dubbed, although I haven't watched it subbed yet.

I'm gay.

RE: Anime - Subs or Dubs?
I still hold my stance from the past that for most cases, I prefer dubs. Only prefer subs when the dubs are particularly bad.

i totally agree. since i watch mostly fan subs, i tend to get used to japanese voice and it just bothers me in the dub....  FLCL is a good example of a good dub... the dub is actually quite funny...

people read into it too much complaining about how a dub isn't an exact translation but they fail to realize two thing and that's you have to tke liberties when translating a launguages because one word can have several meanings or words that are similar in meaning that could aslo be used plus why does it matter? as long as the show is good then its good. if its bad then its bad... dub don't USUALLY change that much of the storyline... but still im a fan of subs because i too am learning japanese and im not fixing my spelling mistakes in this post because im lazy

People seem to say that quality of translation isn't that important...

I'd prefer the meaning to be slightly modified if it appears more natural in the dub.  Like Love Hina, they tried to keep too much of the original meaning that many of the sentences just sounded weird or unnatural.

RE: Anime - Subs or Dubs?
^^ exactly..sounds unnatural... exact tranlations usually don't work out too good and you do have to adlib a bit to make it sound right... and i think that's perfectly ok to do... certain plot events and important storyline stuff should stick closer to the source material... knowing a bit of japanese and watching subbed anime, i notice alot that's not exact what the words would translate into but as long as its subtitle script is well wrote then im ok with it.. once i know enough japanese ill switch to RAWs..
