Yes, anyone can join - just have to make sure you submit it by Saturday (our time), which is still plenty of time :P

Yes, but if your attempt at translation is amusing, then by all means.

Yes, SRT is fine:
Quote:Preferably, submit the subs in donkey format.  If you are unsure about how to do this, you can submit it in another format

Please just submit the subtitles only (ie the .srt file) - don't bother trying to hard sub it into the video.  Only submitting the subtitles is also much smaller (faster upload) than trying to send an entire video file :P

Unless you want to be a wanker be awesome and use like full photoshop/AFX typesetting... Hey, it'll only take you like 20+ hours... Hihi

EDIT: heh, in that case, just sending the overlay files and the avs is still easier than sending the whole hardsubbed vid.

RE: Anime Funsubbing/Parody Subbing Contest
The fact that everyone these days seems to be using soft subs probably means not many fansub groups even do this.

While it is true that soft subs are all the rage these days, I say about 80-90% of fansub groups out there also hardsub onto their encodes while softsubbing at the same time. All of the fancy karaoke effects you see are hardsubbed, and most of the sign typesetting are also hardsubbed. Pretty much he only group which consistently do full softsubbing (no hardsub) is gg (Coalguys I think sometimes too).

Anyway, most of the the AFX and/or photoshop stuff you see is for the karaoke, logo and sign typesetting. Noone ever typesets dialogue with AFX - that's almost as bad as typesetting with avisynth (before anyone asks, yes you can).  EDIT: Actually, full AFX typesetting would take way more effort than full avisynth typeseting. So even worse.

Lol, if I knew enough programming, it'll be interesting to code something to convert srt subs to avisynth. Should be pretty easy. Sensei, you're trying to learn to program right? Go do that.

Probably only for the Xvid encodes.  Can't you do signs with donkey normally?
Could probably use fonts to stick in logos, though IDK.

donkey can only go so far, because after all, it's designed to make subtitles, not signs... AFX can do much more fancy stuff.

Look at this logo. Simply cannot be done with donkey.

And one definite advantage of using AFX/photoshop typesetting is the ability to change the original picture. Not enough space? Make yourself more.

That being said, only few groups have the skill (and willing to put in the effort requied) to do AFX typesetting. Also making it an area where a lot of elitism develops on (one of the reason why people bother. "Our subs are better than yours").

RE: Anime Funsubbing/Parody Subbing Contest
i think the main purpose of this contest is not by subbing skill, its in more creativity, as said by zinga in the first page, and yeah maybe its a start for us for making subs, well going to that later..

and I'll try that AFX format since ive finished my entry for this contest, lol

Spoiler for don't look, might destruct your mind:

Correct.

And I'm just showing some examples of AFX typesetting. There's no way I'm going bother with AFX. (Not that I know how to anyway).

You don't know what you're getting yourself into.... You don't want to. Seriously.

AFX isn't a format. It's short for (Adobe) After Effects. So you pretty much making seperate videos for each sign/logo/whatever, and overlay these onto the original using avisynth. Only for very hardcore fansubbers because it takes way lot of effort.
