RE: Phenom II X3s can have the 4th core unlocked
Back on topic... about re-enabling the 4th core... I think there must be a reason they disabled it, so it might not work as perfectly as you hope it would...
But hey, some people have supposedly done it, and haven't had problems yet.

I remember reading something on the lines of the X3 actually being X4 mass produced with some defect and AMD considered the option of selling them with the defective core disabled... I think it was a rumor or something, at that time... guess not!

i can be desperate for money 1 day and the next day its gone,. ;p
If AMD intended to make 4core cpu's but had big batch of broken core cpu's so they sold them as 3core cpu's,. i gues that's no prob because the price was/is lower then a 4core cpu,. whot else would could they do with a batch load of 4th core cpu's,. ;p << i like rumors!! makes me go

RE: Phenom II X3s can have the 4th core unlocked
You shouldn't compare the Phenom II with the i7. It's more fair to compare it against the Yorkfield processors (Intel Core 2 Quad Q9xxx and Q8xxx) of which, the Phenom II has much better value IMO.
And I've seen a number of gaming benchmarks where the i7 and PII are pretty much on par, so the lower cost of the PII means more money into a better graphics card.

which is the exact reason why I won't be buying an i7.... simply put, I can't afford it yet. I am trying my best to channel all available funds into a PS3. But, at the last moment, I may decide to use that money to get a 4580 and a X4... The Phenom II is at least somewhat affordable for me... :(
that's not really fair to compare,.
- My asus i7 mobo,. p6t,. got alot more interesting feature's wich you won't find on other mobo's!
-All memory is exspensie when its new,. DDR3 now is prob 2x more $ish!
-DDR3 2x 3channel memory instead of 2 channel
anyway its prob $$ but i was lucky my dad wanted to chip in. :)
i def recommend to save your chips for a i7 combo! its fast! (pref the asus p6t!! )
going from 3 core's to 4 core's for free
That's my board :D
A ton of awesome features for a cheap price.

How the hell is that cheap?
That's like more expensive than the most expensive Core2 motherboard.
You can buy a decent motherboard for 1/3 that much, or get yourself a Core2quad Q9400 with that much money...
EDIT: And do you actually use these extra features?

feinicks Wrote:Assassinator Wrote:feinicks Wrote:Phenom II may be good value, but they pale in comparison to i7. I'm not a fanbiy of either, and like to worship value over performance, but the cheapest i7 is still more powerful than a mid range Phenom II at a comparable price...
Errr.... the cheapest i7 costs more than the most expensive Phenom II ...
Yes... but the i7 still performs at least on par, if not better... I said comparable... not cheaper..
Still.. I haven't checked out the latest prices of the processors, so I am not too enlightened on that count.

Phenom II's aren't meant to be competing with the i7. They're an alternative to the Intel Quad core CPUs.
The thing is, their release date is why so many people think what you do.
Also, the Phenom II is really easy to O/C, so the highest one is on par with the core i7 920.
