chocolate power supply is chocolate.
So some time ago, I did a partial (pretty much complete) overhaul of my system. Blog Article.
And I looked at my power supply. It says 480W on it. I estimate my system to not even take close to that, so I though maybe I could skip out on upgrading it...
Initially, there's been some random crashes and shutdowns, but I couldn't pinpoint it to the power supply, although it was one my top suspects due to the weird behavior of the crashes.
And some time later, like a week ago, I was encoding some shit, and there was an explosion noise, and the whole thing shut down. (Scared me big time). It seems my power supply blew itself up... Opened it, and one of the capacitor things blew off, other parts looked pretty burnt black as well... (And there doesn't seem to much stuff inside it. My brothers power supply has way more content, difference between good and poo poo power supplies I guess).
Like WTF?!? My system only takes like at most 270W of power, with overclocking (according to numerous power supply calculators. Hell, I'm not even running a GPU at all). The fudgeing power supply can't even supply half of what it's rated at? What bullshit is this?
Tried to find the brand on the power supply. I can't even find a brand. It just says ATX Power Supply. Err... even the normal poo poo brand "generic" ones have brands... So this one is crapper than poo poo? It came with my old pre-built system a long time ago.
Anyways, comp doesn't start now. Have to wait till the 20th, till I can get my CoolerMaster Centurion T05 case I'm planning to get, and start my computer again. Currently writing this on a laptop.
EDIT: Got the case, 460W power supply, should be plenty.

well I wasn't encoding I was sleeping...
but all I know is that I'm tucked into bed and BLLLZT
BLLZZZT
and flames and smoke start coming out the back of my computer...
the computer didn't take that much power because it was old and only had like a 499 mhz processor and such
and the power supply was out of a case my father had just bought
turns out it was just some cheap made in china piece o' poo poo power supply

Wow, your power supply blew on a 499MHz processor?
That's like even worse than mine. At least mine ran my old 1.6GHz Sempron fine.
Does it have a brand? I seriously can't find the brand on mine.

RE: chocolate power supply is chocolate.
I remember those old PSUs where there was a voltage switch on the back - if you hated the school, twas a cheap way to break a computer (and scare the poo poo out of the next person who turned it on)...
Unfortunately, I never got to try it out...

mine too :D
450w power supply and my graphics card needs a 400w power supplier based on me using a dual-core processor :D

RE: chocolate power supply is chocolate.
one of the first things I bought for a new PC was a PSU. 600W is enough for everything to run at default settings. I can't overclock much. But its sufficient for my current needs.

Actually, stuff really doesn't take as much power as you'd think.
Unless you overclock your quadcore CPU heaps, and have 2 massive GPUs in crossfire or something, a general system shouldn't be able to take more than 600W.
Zinga's system with an overclocked Q6600 and a normal GPU runs comfortably on his 430W PSU.
Here's a power supply calculator if anyone wants. here.
