RE: Second HDD, Disappeared
PC is not overclocked.
Checked cables, both SATA and POWER, they're ok, even tried a different SATA cable and port.
It's a brand new Seagate 500GB and it's been fine for 2 weeks or so. I didn't think they needed jumper settings anyway.

RE: Second HDD, Disappeared
Similar thing has happened to me.. Extended boot, then the comp would lock up when i tried to access the drive for an extended amount of time.
I concluded the drive was failing and I had to get it replaced.
If it's brand new you might want to check if you can change it or at least get it repaired.

RE: Second HDD, Disappeared
sata drives don't need setting as masters or slaves, they're just drives. sounds like a dead drive to me. my dvd drive does this occasionally. what i do is disable any virtual drives i have going (alcohol, daemon tools, magiciso etc...), turn off the computer, disconnect the drive, turn the computer back on and then off again, reconnect the drive and turn it on again ready for use. the computer will detect it as new hardware and all should work well again for a few weeks until my computer decides to poo poo out again.
i seriouysly need to get a new dvd drive as it won't read burnt dvd's anymore or burn them. it can read and burn cd's fine and read commercially made dvd's fine but not burnt dvd's. weird. if ever i need to read or burn a dvd I'll VNC my brothers computer and do it with that.
that reminds me. if possible try the drive in another computer to see if that makes any difference. can you hear the drive spin up when you turn it on? if not do you have another identical drive/ if you do and oyure handy with a screwdriver you could swap the circuit boards on the two drives to see if you have a burnt out circuit board. if you do then at least that way you can recover all the stuff you had on the dead one...

RE: Second HDD, Disappeared
I tried it in another PC, and for some reason the PC wouldn't boot past motherboard with the faulty drive attached. I think the bitch is dead. After two weeks, in a brand new, well ventilated PC, my Seagate Barracuda 500GB looks dead as Elvis. Great.
