Who’ll Chrome hit: Firefox or IE?
As I posted at CT,

Until recently, Google had been trying to undermine Microsoft's hold over the browser market by openly supporting Firefox. Bolstered by an advertising partnership with Google's search engine, Firefox ranks as the second most popular browser, with a market share of more than 10 per cent.

The non-profit Mozilla Foundation, which manages Firefox, has had Google's help both in terms of engineering as well as financially. Firefox has collaborated with Google on a variety of technical issues, including a system for reporting software crashes and to make software browsers more secure.

According to the company's financial figures for the 2006, 85 per cent, or about $57 million of the company's $67 million in annual revenues for the year, came from Google. Last week only, Google extended its advertising alliance with Firefox till 2011.

But, with Crome coming to user’s desktops, what will future hold for Firefox. Will the Google browser hurt Firefox more than Microsoft IE?

I say it'll hurt Firefox more. IE's going to maintain it's position for ages to come.

Most people who aren't very computer literate just look at their Windows, see IE, and use it. They won't know about Firefox or Chrome or Opera or whatever. Chrome is not likely going to 'borrow' many of these customers away. All the businesses and government agencies also almost completely use IE. That won't change any time soon either.

While a higher percentage of Firefox users are more computer literate, and will test out new stuff like Chrome.

precisely..

the only comeback I see for FF is if FF4 is a massively better than Chrome. I'd say that Chrome RC1 or final public release will coincide wit FF4...

RE: Who’ll Chrome hit: Firefox or IE?
Chrome is n00b-friendly, and that's where its appeal lies.

There is no way that users who appreciate Firefox's strengths will move away from it.

IE can be rolled out via Update, they have their market share.

If Google want to compete, they have a lot of work to do, bringing it to Android will be essential, for example, and despite its speed increments, it's easy to say that Firefox or IE or even Opera - is simply fast enough.

There are a few loose-ends on Chrome and if Google don't realize that they NEED to appeal to as wide a user base as possible, they're not going to do well.

Anothing thing to look at, is the 'Apple Effect'.

When Apple launches a new generation of iPods, its a massive deal, always, if they launch a new product altogether, it generates a hell of a lot of discussion, press and general hype.

Google benefits from the same, they are a fashion icon like Apple ~ when they announce a new service, like Gmail for example, it generates waves of interest and everyone want a slice of the cake... the infinite internet cake. Chrome will massively benefit from this, per sé, I saw 'Google announces Internet Explorer rival' on the CNN Business Ticker, and a lot of people watch CNN, and they aren't going to be the only mainstream media to report on it, either. It'll be one of those things that wee have to do - try it out because everyone else is - and this is how Chrome is going to get a strong start and fanbase.

the thing is that once Chrome becomes customizable like FF, then FF has no ace. Also, FF was competing, basically, directly against IE. Opera, Konqueror, Safari, together combined do not sum up to the popularity of FF, which has largely been due to the support of Google. Now things will be different.

FF will always have ace so long as Chrome is ultra n00b-friendly.

You just have to have little smarts to understand how Firefox works.

Unlikely since Chrome is working on being newbie-friendly. Most people who would want add-ons would be experienced users of browsers and therefor would most likely be using FF.

True enough but even without Google support FF would still be more popular than those 3 options due to most experienced browser users would go for FF instead of those 3 due to the fact its customizable and far more secure than IE. Opera is faster than FF, that's granted, but FF's add-ons are just too good to pass up.

I'm not sure how Chrome is with security and speed. I would suspect its security be good since they're aiming for the same audience as Microsoft's Vista but speed is the speed could probably be the same as IE.

Most internet beginners would stick with IE though so I have feeling Chrome is likely to hit the dustbin.

lol. Google practically made Firefox. It's obvious firefox is going to take the hit for this.

@Goshi- after reading your post, it's obvious you have no idea how Google and Mozilla are connected and how powerful the base of Chrome is.

Indeed, explain please Kuu.

And nobody could care how powerful the base of Chrome is - it is far, far from as good as FF at this moment in time, its the n00b-friendly browser. Wouldn't be half surprised if it was included with eeepcs when the Linux version is released...... *shivers*
