At Google, wee have a saying: “launch early and iterate.” While this approach is usually limited to our engineers, it apparently applies to our mailroom as well! As you may have read in the blogosphere, wee hit "send" a bit early on a comic book introducing our new open source browser, Google Chrome. As wee believe in access to information for everyone, wee've now made the comic publicly available -- you can find it here. Wee will be launching the beta version of Google Chrome tomorrow in more than 100 countries.

So why are wee launching Google Chrome? Because wee believe wee can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web.

All of us at Google spend much of our time working inside a browser. Wee search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And in our spare time, wee shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends -- all using a browser. Because wee spend so much time online, wee began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if wee started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. Wee realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that wee needed to completely rethink the browser. What wee really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what wee set out to build.

On the surface, wee designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. It's only a tool to run the important stuff -- the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

Under the hood, wee were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better. By keeping each tab in an isolated "sandbox", wee were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. Wee improved speed and responsiveness across the board. Wee also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers.

This is just the beginning -- Google Chrome is far from done. Wee're releasing this beta for Windows to start the broader discussion and hear from you as quickly as possible. Wee're hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and will continue to make it even faster and more robust.

Wee owe a great debt to many open source projects, and wee're committed to continuing on their path. Wee've used components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others -- and in that spirit, wee are making all of our code open source as well. Wee hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward.

The web gets better with more options and innovation. Google Chrome is another option, and wee hope it contributes to making the web even better.

Ok, I just read the whole comic. Firefox and IE are doomed.

This is the most powerful, safest browser ever to be created.

The sand box alone makes you dumb to stay on Firefox or IE.

They only thing that may hurt it is the simplicity. the average user is going to use IE, there is no stopping that as long as it is pre-installed with Windows.
The more experienced users however will use Firefox, or other more powerful browsers that you actually have to go on the web and download.
Thus the new google chrome may not do as well as FF, as it's based on simplicity made for those average users.

FF has the benefits of being good both on the outside, and under the hood, where as Chrome is massively powerful under the hood, but is plain on the outside.

What's even more interesting here, is Google and Mozilla are still working together... so potentially FF4 will take Chrome's technology, re-write Firefox's backbone, and a great browser will be born.

Chrome will defiantly be installed on my computer and used on a regular basses as I open multiple tabs in FF all the time, the loading gets annoying as hell, but Chrome will solve that.

But for now, Chome, on paper, seems to be the best browser choice for both IE and FF users, until an FF comes out that uses the sandbox and multi-threading ideas Chrome has come up with.

I actually went to the Google business in Seattle, it was pretty cool, they explained to us what 20% projects were, and they are projects that employees are allowed to work on that benefit Google in some way (not related to there work at hand) I'm guessing this is one of them.

I would say that with google growing at the rate it is and all the products and advertising they offer, And Microsoft failing horribly at there new ideas (vista lol) Google might be up there with both Apple and Microsoft, making internet browsers use to be a big thing back in the day, Microsoft literally forced company's to stop making them or say to the windows customers that the browsers would harm you computer. I really like Google and hope they become something big, I will definitely switch to it, because i know it will have everything you NEED instead of extra things, and no doubt that it will be as fast or faster than Firefox and as safe or safer, but that's just my two cents... I are not how to english well.

Haven't read all of it, but it looks like they're putting an awful lot of effort into promoting a multi-process browser. This concept isn't new. It's been used for ages in applications like webservers. Multi-process applications tend to take up a quite a lot more RAM than single process ones, though they typically don't get impacted much by memory leaks.
I don't think it'd be terribly difficult for Firefox to shift its design over to a multiprocess one...

Agreed.

I just read the whole comic and I have to say - this is really damn impressive - and with an Open Source look at things as well, IE is totally fudgeed.

Chrome will have a pornprivacy feature as well LOL
