RE: 50 Terabyte Protein-Coated Disks!!!
Lol
id rather have them make the disks smaller and non-moving though, like a 5x5cm square as thick as a dvd that stores 10tb. Then, it would beat flash memory cause of the moving parts, be smaller, so no more 5.25" bays but only 2.5" for both HDDs and "ODD"s... And smaller laptops

RE: 50 Terabyte Protein-Coated Disks!!!
nah
cd/dvd drives are only big cause its the only standard size that a CD fits in
if CDs were twice as small
all ODDs would be the size of harddrives

^MiniCDs :P
Actually, optical media is generally not good for writing - even if they could make writing to optical media seamless, there's still a big speed issue.
Optical media is generally good for price - eg, a DVD costs around AU$0.40, and can hold ~4.37GB. A 4GB USB drive costs a lot more.

RE: 50 Terabyte Protein-Coated Disks!!!
if they could make something
like a big light and a lcd filter
to write a cd with just one flash
then it would be cool...

RE: 50 Terabyte Protein-Coated Disks!!!
who says u need laser :P Double postcome to think of it
a cd burner's laser is what, 0.1mw? theres 100watt+ lasers out there, meaning if you move it really quickly or diffuse it you should be able to write an entire cd in one shot right?

RE: 50 Terabyte Protein-Coated Disks!!!
^^The aim is that the laser is thin enough to etch pits in the disc's tracks. If you overpower a laser, it'll just burn through the disc. If you spread it out... well, it defeats the purpose, as you can no longer etch small pits.
You'd have to have multiple lasers...
