VLC has BIG problems with softsubs. It doesn't support fonts and certain typesetting features for donkey/ssa subtitle streams, making your subs look really fugly in some cases. And sometimes the subs don't fit propperly and overlap. And for srt subs (don't know if it's the case for others types as well) it cuts out the very 1st line of subtitles in the file (that was like 1+ years ago. Could be fixed now).

that's the only reason I have MPC ;p

Imo MPC + a decent codec pack should not be inferior to VLC at any aspect (besides for the fact that it's more annoying to install). So I don't see the reason in using 2 seperate media players when you can just use 1.

Ctrl+Alt+T.

I use Always on Top Maker.

I watch what is being transmitted full screen to the TV using ATi Cinema Mode.

VLC Sticks on top, but MPC for some reason disables the Always on Top and hides - its only suitable when I use it for PC Fullscreen viewing.

Not just that, VLC has just always been my trusty-player I know will just work. I have experienced Crashing and having to unnecessarily fiddle with settings to make sure MPC works properly. Especially when it comes to HD 720p Video - I changed the output to use Haalis and its working now... still, VLC is has earned my trust to work constantly.

Try using the KMPlayer (directshow player. Like MPC). It defaults itself to being always on top. And I had to try to get it off the 1st time I ran it.

Yeah, MPC does seems to crash more than VLC. Well, when using K-Lite (the most popular codec pack) it crashed quite often. Maybe the settings just don't work too well with my computer (particular splitter, decoder, settings, whatever), when using Storm, it doesn't seem to crash as often, and also seems to start up faster.

And VLC decodes h.264 a bit too slowly for my liking. For HD Videos, VLC sometimes lag, where MPC doesn't (and that's using ffdshow. CoreAVC is even faster).

Decodes it perfectly for me... but it sucks with Softsubs like you mentioned..

So a combo of both players keeps me happy ^_^

Well, your computer must be stronger than mine then. And it also depends on the particular encode, what codec, what settings...

Can you play 1920x1080 framed h.264 without lag?

I have downloaded 1080 HD video before... and maybe because of my screen being too small... it was being somewhat jagged.. but it works fine.. [without anything major running at the same time]

I'm on an Intel Core Duo 2 1.8GHz

Jagged referring to edges, or slightly lagging?

AMD Sempron 2600. Yeah, yours is way better.

When VLC lags bigtime, I end up with this kind of poo poo. Sadist

(Imageshack being gay just then. Took me like 5 tries to upload that. Even though it's only 270kb. Kept timing out.)
