both... hackers just do it cause they can. So even if sony made the fw unhackable, sooner than later, it would be!

I think the first one.

I believe it was initially Sony's problem for screwing up their own security of the PSP.
Because of that, there was a mass interest in hacking it (without hardware modifications).
