Already own a house - nice.  With house prices going through the roof over here (not literally), I still wonder how I'm ever going to get a house...

Construction, should, probably take around half a year.  Ours took around that time, once it actually started (just the builders were kinda dodgey).

Just get a decent job (which you are most likely capable of doing) and it wouldn't be that hard. To get a small house, like 2-3 bedroom, it shouldn't take that much. If you lets say can get a net saving (income - tax - expenditure) of $30,000 per year, it'll only take like 7-10 years? If you get a good job, depending on your personal situation, you should easily be able to add more than $30,000 to your coffers every year. Wouldn't take that long, especially if you can borrow a part of it from the bank if you choose so.

But yeah, house prices in Australialand has pretty much 3-4x in prices in that price rise. Our house has pretty much doubled in worth. 0.44mil to about estimated 0.8mil? (wee didn't buy right at the start, otherwise it'll be more).

But the good thing (for people wanting to buy house, bad thing for people with house) is that the prices have pretty much stopped rising now. It's not going to rise any higher anytime soon.

You had your house constructed? Is that generally cheaper or more expensive?

RE: I just spent a quarter of a million dollars
haha thanks guys :)  If anyone ins visiting or stranded in the midwest you know whereyou can stay :)

* SchmilK is not rich...just has been woprking professionaly in the computer business for 12 years and married a beautiful lady who makes just a little bit less than he does

The only time i save money is when i buy something on sale..then i spend that saved money later LOL  My wife is just as good at it as i am.

WEE got REALY lucky...since i am a first time home buyer and i have the better credit wee are able to get a first time home owner mortgage for 97% of the purchase cost..so wee had to come up with $7400 from thin air..lucky for me, sarah could borrow half of what her 401k has in it to get the down payment.  Then she gets $66 taken out of each paycheck to pay that back, plus the interest she pays back goes right back into her 401k..so its like adouble bonus..

The housing market here is literally crumbling!  In the end of february the builder dropped the prices of the homes between 30,000-45,000 (wee got the house with a $44,140 drop in price...AND wee were able to get all ceramic floors 'level 3' (the highest level) upgraded kitchen cabinets and appliances and a premium lot that backs up to the trees for $12,000 less than the original price of the house back in February!

There are a fwe homes being sold in theneighborhood that have been there for a few years and they are lots higher than wee payed for the smaller cheaper houses.  So right now its foolish NOT to buy new construction.

Once wee get all the mortgage info passed back and forth and they get all the village building permits wee should be moving in at th end of september/early october!

so yeah..i woke up today and this post is still here so i guess its the truth...wee realy bought a house!~

I'm not saying you have to save, as long as you're happy, whatever is fine.

I'm just the type of person who saves up a lot. I'd imagine that after I get a job (uni student currently) I'd probably be saving like more than 1/2 my income, if I'm around standard income, and maybe even more if I'm high income. Guess it's been hammered into my head by my parents. I don't spend much at all.

Always good to own your own house I guess.
