Wow, that sucks.
And Roberth, use something like the Ubuntu live disc to boot the computer safely, hook up an external drive, back up all her files, format the drive and reinstall windows, then install NOD32 and clean the viruses out of her old files, then put them back on the internal HDD.

Man, if I had 8 inches, I would find a better use for it :P

RE: my dad really doesn't know how to look after a pc
that is my usual course of action in a case this bad(its surprising how often they come up), but she insists her dad si coming over tomorrow to fix it, so i left it at that
I know its usally fixable, but ive had perhaps 10 cases in the past 2 months where the computer wouldnt boot unless in safe mode, and even then i would often get a BsOD after everything had loaded
And i only do it as a hobby for friends/relatives. friends of friends or relatives etc
And of those 10 cases, 8 were built exactly the same as this one, by Dell, and unable to be opened (at least with my tools)

Unlimited NOD32 For the win - ESET Security Suite even better ^_^
I've also had a bad time with dust myself - I opened a Dell that wasn't opened for at least 3 years, I ripped what I could out of it to fit into a new Chassis & MoBo - even when i didn't clean it, it still made me feel nauseas......
WALLS upon WALLS of dust, a slight tamper and it would blow up in my face ...........

are Dells in other places same as in UK (tacked down backs instead of screws, can't be removed without severe force and therefore not being able to refit the backplate thereafter?)

Oh and was that poo poo really dust or was it the thermal paste that seals the heatsink to the cpu?
No it was dust. it was between all the fins and after mashing it up a bit with a screwdriver it would turn to powder and blow away once i took the cloth and screwdrivers outside to clean.

About compressed air - I heard that the force of it can damage some sensitive chips or something - dunno, but at least be a bit wary of it.
...wow, that's a lot of dust.
I've got a 1996-7 Pentium 200MHz computer right behind me which hasn't been cleaned out for years, and I don't think it's that bad (but then, Pentium I's never really heated up much, so never really needed much cooling).
