RE: Naruto
w00t ive already finished watching ep22

ive got a few questions though
what do -kun -san -chan etc mean after a name
cause i didnt really pay attention to it until ep20 then the little kids say 'konohamaru-kun' and then 'konohamaru-chan' or something. which made me wonder

RE: Naruto
all words are used to respect others :)

sama is for people ranked above you (like your master or something),

chan is for girls and women, and it indicates familiarity.

kun is for boys to indicate familiarity.

san could be used with anyone you're not familiar with, like strangers or people you're meeting for the first time.

sensei -- teacher

Hope that helps :)

RE: Naruto
I should fix this up:
Those are called honorifics.

san is the generic one - use it if you don't know what to use.
chan is usually used for girls, but can be used on familiar boys too (eg onii-chan = older brother); doesn't have to indicate familiarity at all
kun is the male version of chan
sama, dono, sempai etc are used to address "higher ranking people" (eg elders, or a child addressing a teacher)

Technically, they don't go in translations, but most subbers stick 'em in anyways.
