But normally those people will not experiment and try new things, which the point of adding a theme is for.
That makes literally no sense whatsoever.

Yes it does. When it's a freestyle battle people will not experiment.
They will usually just use their same old boring style they use on every sig.
Bring back the FUNK.
Oh and Kaiser I thought you were going to put my recommendation.

That... does not make any sense. You're suggesting that everyone here can't think for themselves, and need to be told what to do to be more creative with their work..

Guess not :(

I NEVER said that people cannot think for themselves. I never said everyone either. I am just saying people (MAJORITY) tend to stick tot one style with every sig and I am saying themes are supposed to help them by making them try other things. But this is just a friendly competition and if you choose not to enter, don't. If you choose to try and experiment (or just stay with the same style everytime) do it.

Wee must have different definitions of what style is..
I won't mention them, but there are a few people who feel obliged to enter SOTW, whether they like their work or not. This makes me feel like the competitions are tainted somewhat, but it can't be helped so I'm not bothering with doing anything about it, I don't need to.
I expect to see entrance use their style in an entirely fresh way, as they should do with every signature they make. There shouldn't be any pre-defined look to ones work. This just shows a lack of creativity - and I see these repeated looks MOST in Themed SOTWs. Even by fair comparison, Freestyle is the most creative SOTW of them all.

Sorry I just have to disagree.
Freestyle just gives more variety of what to vote for. Thus making it harder to vote. Don't confuse it with creativity.

RE: SOTW # 50 -- Freestyle
I guess the fact is that freestyle is not really that popular as the person making a sig has to think from the scratch. What stock to use, what theme, what background, what colours, how big, how colourful or dark, what effects, use c4d or not, rip from someplace hopefully no one has ever heard of here (yup I have seen that happen.. three trillion webpages.. no one can tab ALL). The freedom of choice is really not welcome.
Themes really make things easier. There is a conformity in what everyone will make. Its easier for both the artist and the audience. Freestyle really needs a "freestyle" or abstract thinking. For instance, as an audience, you need to have the ability to not relate one work with the other as they were not based on a comparable platform. freestyle is just an artist's impression about something thought of on the spot. Unlike themed battles, where everyone already knows what to expect.. that its going to be something about batman or hulk or anime or hershey kisses or watever.
Freestyle explores an artist's imagination to the max. Themes test his skills as he has to make the same thing that everyone is making, but make it better...

Not always. The 'artist' could say, "Oh I liked this anime I want to make a sig of this character!" and he/she then goes off and gets a render/stock and usually quickly does his/her usual effects and whatever to it. It gets the same looks as his/her others with the exception that it's a different subject..
