Debian based distros are probably more popular than Redhat based for the majority of users, though the latter works better with tools such as cPanel and enterprises (support) etc.
I don't think Backtrack is really for most people out there.  It's primarily meant to be used as a live CD/DVD tool for penetration testing / offline based attacks, not as an OS you really use permanently (though of course, you can do that if you wish).
