Also makes your HDD spin like crazy.
I doubt it. An I/O bound process which is mostly waiting for disk reads uses very little CPU. it's actually somewhat difficult to get a program to fully thrash both CPU and HDD at the same time (well, not really, but for most apps not specifically designed to do this, it's rare).

I'll bet you $100 if you do a fresh install of XP, run Firefox from day one, and install Avira, or similar the system will be 10 times faster.
Interesting observation I guess, though I'd say the service packs probably have more of the impact, rather than IE...
I've had an XP install running from around 2003 to 2006, on my old Celeron 533MHz, 128MB SDRAM, TNT2 graphics, 80GB HDD (was originally a 4GB, got upgraded); never reinstalled Windows, just same installation, and it never really felt any slower than after it was on a clean install. The machine never really connected to the internet (I think it was hooked up to dialup at some point, but wasn't used much) and didn't have any antivirus installed. Then again, I used to tweak that machine like hell >_>

symantec is by far the worst performing antivirus..especially on a p4! At my work they were using that before I showed up..then i switched them to McAfee and I do custom installs for ONLY antivirus, no mail/internet/etc plugins...computers are way faster now. Sucks you have to deal with that, I HATE fixing peoples computer at work..especially when my 6 year old HP laptop that I gave to my wife that has a 1.8ghz Pentium M runs better than 3.2ghz pentium 4s.
*what kind of work are you doing now?*

RE: Slow computers - hardware or software?
Ive had a few cases where it was the OS that slowed my comp down a ridiculous amount. After reinstalling it, and starting from scratch, everything ran much smoother. Also, as many here know, recently I had hardware problems as well. Both can be such an annoyance to deal with. RAM, hard drive, processor, OS, processes... all of it can bring your computer to its knees. I wish it was that only ONE thing could slow down your computer, making troubleshooting so much easier (9+ hours of trying to get my computer back up to snuff agrees with me). I recently was experiencing similar problems. My i7 was slower than MY netbook as well lol. Now, everything is going pretty smooth. However, there are some hiccups still, and so I need to go back to more diagnosing.
I also remember years back, on my Compaq Presario with its like 200Mhz or so, it'd buckle whenever it started up if I didn't immediately turn off SW Doctor. Anti-virus software often seems to be such an annoyance. My netbook was experiencing like a full minute of slowdown upon booting up, and I figured out it was the preloaded antivirus trial software that came with it.
Wasn't really trying to change the topic to be about me, but even with as little experience as I have with putting together computers, I can understand where you are coming from.
