RE: Gaming PC
For gaming, all you really need to worry about is the graphics card. It really also depends on your monitor, and what kind of detail you'll be seeing in-game. For most people, something like a 4870 or a gtx260 will be plenty for using on a 1680x1050 monitor, but once you start getting to around 1920x1200, in some games you might have to lower to med-high instead of maximum, with less anti-aliasing, and all the guns and whistles.  What resolution will you be playing on?  Gtx280 should do you just fine for almost all games currently out.

I haven't checked the resolution of the monitor that I'll be using.

I know it's a Gate Way Dotdotdot but as far as the other specs go, it seems to fit what I need.
Bad GPU (it's worse than mine, and my computer wasn't even designed for gaming).
Absurd amount of RAM considering the other components (4GB enough for gaming).
A Phenom I CPU (pretty much phased out by Phenom II / Athlon II).  A faster dual core would be better than a slower quad core (though I guess difference isn't much, but you're paying extra anyway).

Definitely not a gaming PC.  Might be useful for those who don't game, need a quad core (though I still don't recommend Phenom I) and heaps of RAM.

RE: Gaming PC
Like I said... you are getting over-excited for PCs with bad GPUs... I suggest go for any of those build, but replace the GPU to at least 4870 (If you, like me, are restricted to the max resolution of 1440*900).

Hdd: No comment. Its entirely up to you.

Processor: If you're more into gaming, then anything over what Senseito has, is capable. High end C2Ds/similar priced AMDs (Phenom II X2/X3/X4) or more expensive than that (Intel Quad, i7s etc) is good, but not really required for Gaming.

Motherboard: Either get a nice compatible motherboard which allows expansion options (like SLI/CrossfireX, many USB ports, many connecting capabilities etc) or get one that's cheap but is able to live. Up to you.

PSU: Definitely need a good one. Something similar to CoolerMaster eXtreme 600W
RAM: Any RAM over 3GB is more than sufficient for most modern games. Go for 800 and above MHz in DDR2 and over 1333 in DDR3. Still, 1333MHz DDR3 is not justifying its Price vs Performance.

Monitor: Upon you, again. Anything over 19" is decent. But choose between 22" and 24" for ideal gaming. Do note that native/max resolution will have an impact from the Graphics card you have. Refer to what Hellgiver said.

Keyboard/Mice: They are gaming accessories. I own a normal keyboard (trying to get a good one) and Microsoft Razer Habu. But at least get decent keyboard and mice.

Other stuff... again.. up to you.

Buying a system and then replacing the GPU is stupid, may as well buy a system with a good GPU, saves you paying for the GPU twice.

Sensei has a 2.1GHz Athlon X2 for reference.

In my opinion, "good PSU" is somewhat overrated.  As long as it's not completely poo poo, it shouldn't stuff up on you.  If you're on a budget, buy a case that comes with a PSU, saves you a lot of money.

Gaming mouse/keyboards are extremely overrated imo.  You can game with a $5 mouse just fine, it's skill not mouse that determines if you can hit their head.

Better known PSUs are known to have much more "true" wattage thresholds than generic ones - and its also true that a higher quality PSU would be better for overclocking.

Don't nitpick on me though, this is what I read in CustomPC (who did a complete PSU analysis over generic brands through ASUS to Coolermaster).

What? Am I the benchmark for low-end? :(

You misunderstood... what I'm saying is go for those build when the more powerful GPU is there. Else, its just easier to buy all those parts minus the GPU on Newegg, and build the better PC.

I disagree about "overrated". I am using my entire build with a CoolerMaster eXtreme 390W. Before this, I got a cheap-build 500W PSU and it blew up.... This one is holding pretty nicely (though, I;m not sure I can OC my graphics card.) Also, This is why I'd prefer going for a CoolerMaster cabinet....

True, but if your skills are good and you have enough money to spend on them, they are worth it... For instance, you own a Death Adder. You know it feels a little better than normal mice. Also, my Pen-Tool skills in PS are also boosted my the more sensitive response of the Habu.

Though yes, I agree.. get it only if you have no other expenses... (same as what I did... before my processor and mobo died on me.. =,=)

I'm sure there is...

I have AMD Athlon X2 2.1GHz dual
4GB RAM, ATi Mobility Radeon 4600 Series

And that's not bad at all.. really.

Admittedly, its not the greatest for modern gaming.. but I have finished Modern Warfare 2 on it.. albeit a pretty low resolution (I have to have anti-alias -.-)

I actually had a PSU blow up on me too, but that was a no-brand peice of shit that I don't know how I ended up with (back then I didn't build my own machine).  Currently using a 460W Coolermaster PSU that came with my case of the same brand.

I agree you shouldn't buy supercheap/no-brand PSUs, but imo any decently priced (not super cheap) PSU from any brand that is commonly heard of shouldn't break on you, don't really have to go for high end PSUs.

EDIT: Wait, I just did a search, and it seems your recommendation, the Coolermaster Extreme isn't actually the really expensive high end line, Coolermaster Real Power is.  Sorry, I thought it was from looking at it's name ("Extreme").
