RE: Lightscribing
No program will work without the system software.
Saw a 1.5TB HDD for AU$138 yesterday - it's starting to make me consider how long optical media will last. That's around AU$0.10 per GB assuming you only get around 1.35TB of usable space. LS discs really aren't that worth it unless you need to play it in a DVD player, or something else you prefer from discs.

that's really damn good.. but Ive had bad experiences with Ext. HDDs (I know your suggesting you got an internal drive) in the past with the death of a drive perhaps from overuse or overheating but it died much too quick than I wanted - before I left Tenerife I noticed I was getting corrupt sectors on a second drive. Maybe I just had bad luck
I wonder how big you can get USB powered ones nowadays... [in complete honesty I was looking at DVDs to store animes I can't buy... unlicensed anime like Da Capo, Chaos;Head, SZS..]

RE: Lightscribing
Just buy a casing for any internal drive - cheaper than the ones put together. Connect via eSATA and it's blazingly fast.
Yeah, disk shock etc is perhaps a downside of using a HDD as an archiving medium - the HDD dies, and all your 1.5TB of data is gone.

exactly. so that voids the entire point of them doesn't it? I suppose that's where SSD is coming along well as a Mass Storage medium... still stupidly pricey though.
My lappy has eSATA but its not like every computer has it anyway... and yeah, internals with casing are something Ive particularly been put off of.
