A bit of a shame with your mother, but at least you met some nice people today.
Yeah, it's cool to have plans and such, but it's not always practical, so don't worry about it too much - you've still got your whole life ahead of you and don't have to restrict yourself from awesome things just because it isn't your birthday.
Personally have never cared too much about birthdays - it's basically the earth being aligned with the sun in (about) the same way as the day you were born. I dunno, I've never found that particularly special - it seems like an arbitrary combination (eg you could do the same with moon alignment etc), but then again, I'm a pessimist.
