1 background layer
2 icon layer,..
then when my icon is finished duplicate it and set saturation to -100 and lightnes to +100 and copy the layer i make a new akpha and past it into th new alpha channel,.

You could also not duplicate the layer but "ctrl" click the icon layer and go into channels tab make new alpha layer,. paint the selection white  then blur sometimes to get soft edges,..

Then what i do to get the colors in the alpha channel down is,.. to copy the alpha channel make new picture with rgb not grey scale then paste the alpha channel in the new picture into the layer then do index color 20 and set back to rgb copy past the picture back into your first picture's alpha channel ,..this way you can try to get the colors in the alpha channel dow,..

i am gonna try the above link with its tutoriol too,.. see if i can learn something ,..
