As far as I know only Samsung Galaxy S phones have native MKV support. Which would mean Samsung added it. I have played 720p MKV video (will need to get the specs of the vid for you) without issue on my Galaxy S i9000 (and this is the S II i9100 playing 1080p MKV) - native MKV support allows them to use softsubs with mVideoPlayer too but 720p and softsubs tend to make the i9000 struggle.

Sounds like apps need to catch up to Android 4.0 and yeah - you'll need to get used to the lack of flexibility a computer has... but you'll have more with Android than you would on iOS. Amazed it's your first phone. Enjoy it!
