well it is indeed a frightening prospect, but how do you know that sony themselves have already had developers reverse-engineer OE firmware

My first thought as well, much as I hate some of the things Sony does, they're not idiots.  There's some very talented coders working there, and I'm sure that it's been cracked by now.
